Chapter 9

The heavy steel door slammed shut behind Clara as she was forcibly escorted out of the maximum-security wing, but the echo of her final gesture lingered in Elena’s mind. As the guard on duty grumbled and walked back down the hall to complete his patrol, Elena noticed a janitorial cart left unattended near the intake desk just outside her open cell slot. Draped casually over the lower shelf of the cart was the heavy black wool coat Clara had worn during her desperate visit.

Elena’s heart pounded against her ribs. She pressed her fingers through the narrow opening of the door, stretching as far as her arm could reach, but the cart was just a few inches out of grasp. She waited in agonizing silence until the guard rounded the far corner of the corridor, his footsteps fading into the distance.

Dropping to her knees, Elena reached her arm as far through the slot as humanly possible, straining every muscle in her shoulder until her fingertips brushed the hem of the heavy wool coat. With a sharp, desperate tug, she managed to snag the fabric and drag the coat closer, inch by inch, until the entire garment bunched up against the base of her cell door.

Working quickly in the dim light, Elena searched the pockets of the coat. Her trembling fingers brushed past a crumpled tissue, a tube of chapstick, and finally grazed against a small, cold piece of molded plastic. She pulled it out: a standard encrypted USB flash drive, heavy and solid.

"What do you have there, Vance?"

Elena froze. The heavy footsteps of the guard echoed loudly as he rounded the corner, his flashlight beam cutting sharply through the iron bars of her door. With lightning speed, Elena shoved the flash drive deep into the hem of her orange jumpsuit, standing up straight just as the guard’s face appeared at the slot.

"Step away from the door, inmate," the guard ordered, shining his flashlight directly into her eyes. "Show me your hands."

Elena raised her hands slowly, forcing her breathing to remain even and controlled. The guard grunted in suspicion, shining the beam around the cell floor before noticing the black coat crumpled near the threshold. He cursed under his breath, using the toe of his heavy boot to shove the coat away, locking the door panel with a sharp click before moving on.

Elena exhaled a long, shaky breath, sinking down onto the edge of her steel frame bed. She pulled the flash drive from her jumpsuit, turning it over in her palm. Clara had risked everything to get this to her. It was encrypted, requiring a secure terminal to access, but Elena knew the prison's legal library computer terminal—supervised by an aging clerk who occasionally looked the other way for a pack of contraband cigarettes—might just hold the key.

The next morning, during mandated legal library hour, Elena sat hunched over an antiquated desktop computer in the corner of the room. The old machine hummed noisily, its amber screen casting a harsh glow across her bruised face. She inserted the flash drive into the dusty USB port. A password prompt immediately flashed on the screen, demanding a twelve-character security key.

Elena stared at the blinking cursor. Julian’s passwords were always tied to significant dates in his corporate history. She tried the date of their company’s founding—access denied. She tried their wedding anniversary—access denied. With one attempt left before the drive wiped itself automatically, Elena typed in the birthday of Alex’s beloved golden retriever, a dog Julian had supposedly rehomed after the disappearance.

The screen flickered. Folders began to populate the amber display: offshore bank accounts, corporate restructuring documents, police payoffs, and a hidden video file labeled simply: Cape Mendocino_Final.
