Chapter 3

Elena ignored Julian’s warning, her focus narrowing entirely to the silver latch of the white casket. With a grunt of pure desperation, she wedged the metal wrench into the seam and threw her entire body weight against the handle. The brass mechanism resisted with a loud, metallic shriek that echoed through the silent, watching hall. The seal broke, releasing a faint, heavy odor of preserved cedar and faint floral musk.
In the background, Clara watched with wide, terrified eyes, her breath catching in her throat. The bride’s fingers clawed frantically at the delicate lace of her veil, pulling it back from her face as if she needed more oxygen to process the unfolding nightmare. "I knew Alex..." Clara gasped, her voice trembling uncontrollably. "Who is in there?"
The question hung suspended in the heavy air of the reception hall, directed not just at Elena, but at Julian, whose face had gone completely grey. Elena did not answer her sister immediately. Instead, she used both hands to heave the heavy lid upward. The polished white wood swung open on well-oiled hinges, revealing the interior lined with immaculate pleated white satin.
Inside lay a man dressed in a matching black tuxedo, his hands neatly folded across his chest over a single white rose. His skin possessed the pale, waxy texture of careful mortuary preservation, his dark hair neatly combed back from a familiar, high forehead. It was a face that had haunted Elena’s nightmares every single night of her confinement. But as her tear-filled eyes scanned the motionless features, a wave of profound, sickening realization washed over her. The man resting peacefully inside the white wedding casket was not the man who had vanished two years ago. It was a stranger.
Elena staggered backward, dropping the heavy wrench with a dull clatter against the marble floor. Her hands flew to her mouth to stifle a sob of pure confusion. She looked from the body in the casket up to Julian, whose shoulders visibly sagged in an eerie mixture of relief and lingering dread.
"You didn't bury him," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the nervous rustle of the crowd behind her. "Where is he, Julian? Where did you put the real Alex?"
May you like
Julian swallowed hard, adjusting his black bow tie with a finger that would not stop shaking. He looked past Elena, his eyes meeting Clara’s terrified gaze for a fraction of a second before he locked his jaw. The fragile illusion of the perfect society wedding had been utterly shattered, replaced by something much darker and far more intricate than anyone in the room could have ever imagined.
Sirens began to wail in the distance, faint at first, but growing steadily louder as they cut through the quiet evening air outside the venue. Red and blue lights flashed against the tall arched windows, casting long, dancing shadows across the white floral arrangements. Security guards finally found their footing, stepping cautiously down the aisle toward the kneeling convict and the stunned groom.
