Chapter 8

The rain drummed a relentless, heavy tattoo against the reinforced glass of Cell 402. Days blurred into nights inside maximum security, marked only by the clang of metal trays sliding through the narrow slot in the heavy steel door. Elena sat cross-legged on her thin mattress, her eyes closed, meticulously replaying every second of her brief freedom in her mind.

She knew she couldn't rely on the prison system or the local police. Warden Vance had made it abundantly clear that her reports of a conspiracy would be filed away as the delusions of a desperate inmate. Her only lifeline was outside these walls—specifically, her sister Clara. But reaching Clara through Julian’s impenetrable wall of security seemed an impossible task.

A sharp, metallic clang echoed down the corridor, followed by the heavy thud of boots stopping directly outside her cell. Elena didn't flinch. She kept her eyes closed, listening intently to the muffled voices in the hallway.

"...orders from the top," a gruff voice muttered, belonging to one of the senior guards. "No contact, no exceptions. The visitor has already been turned away once."

"Please," a second voice pleaded—a voice so soft, so distinctly feminine and familiar that Elena’s eyes snapped open in absolute astonishment. "Just five minutes. I need to see my sister. I have a right to know what's happening."

Clara.

Elena scrambled off the bed, racing across the small cell and pressing her face desperately against the narrow wire-reinforced glass slot in the heavy steel door. "Clara!" she shouted, her voice echoing down the bleak corridor. "Clara, get out of here! It's not safe!"

Down the hall, standing between two imposing guards near the security checkpoint, Clara turned around, her eyes widening as she heard her sister's voice. She wore a heavy black wool coat over her clothes, her face pale and drawn, completely stripped of the society polish she had worn on her wedding day.

"Elena!" Clara cried, taking a desperate step forward before the guards firmly blocked her path. "They wouldn't let me in! They told me you were locked down, but I had to come! Julian told me to stay away, he said you were dangerous, but I couldn't stop thinking about what you said at the altar!"

"Listen to me, Clara!" Elena urged, gripping the sides of the metal slot so hard her knuckles turned white. "Julian isn't who you think he is! He didn't just frame me for embezzlement—he took everything from Alex. That body in the casket... if it wasn't a stranger, it was someone Julian silenced to keep his empire from crumbling! You are living with a monster!"

"Quiet down in there!" the senior guard barked, stepping up to Elena’s cell and giving the steel door a heavy, rattling kick. He turned his attention back to Clara, gesturing sharply toward the exit. "You heard the warden, Mrs. Miller. This visitor pass is revoked. You need to leave right now, or we'll have you escorted off the property."

Clara stared at the heavy metal door of Cell 402 with tears streaming freely down her face. She pressed a trembling hand against the cold steel from the outside, mirroring Elena’s position. Before the guards could physically force her away, Clara pulled a small, heavy silver flash drive from her coat pocket—a drive she had managed to swipe from Julian’s private wall safe earlier that morning—and slipped it quickly into the pocket of a nearby visitor's coat hanging on the rack, whispering a single word through her tears: "Remember."
