Chapter 7

Back at the sprawling Miller estate, miles away from the bleak reality of the prison cell, the post-wedding reception was a ghost town. The expensive crystal chandeliers hummed quietly, illuminating rows of untouched tables, wilted white floral arches, and shattered champagne flutes.

Clara sat alone in the grand master dressing room, still wearing her heavy white silk wedding gown. The veil had been discarded on the floor like a discarded spiderweb. She stared at her reflection in the gilded vanity mirror, tracing the outline of her own jawline with trembling fingers. The woman staring back at her looked pale, exhausted, and desperately afraid.

The heavy mahogany door clicked open, and Julian stepped into the room. He had removed his tuxedo jacket, his white dress shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing strong, lightly tanned arms. He carried two crystal glasses filled with amber scotch, setting one down gently on the glass top of the vanity beside Clara.

"Drink this, sweetheart," Julian said, his voice smooth and soothing, masking the underlying tension in his posture. "You've had a terrible shock. The police have secured the venue, and the media reports are already being managed by our PR team. Everything is under control."

Clara did not touch the glass. She slowly turned her head to look up at her new husband, her eyes searching his face with a chilling intensity that made Julian’s hand hesitate on the edge of the table.

"Julian," Clara whispered, her voice barely louder than a breath. "Who was in that casket?"

Julian’s expression didn't change, but the muscles in his jaw tightened visibly. He took a slow sip of his scotch before answering, maintaining a calm, reassuring smile. "It was a tragic reminder of a dark time, Clara. A symbolic memorial for the man who ruined your sister's life and nearly bankrupted our family. You know how unstable Elena is. She orchestrated that bizarre display to hurt us, to ruin the happiest day of our lives."

"No," Clara said, standing up from the vanity with a sudden, jerky motion that made the silk skirts of her wedding gown whisper against the floorboards. She stepped away from him, her eyes flashing with a desperate skepticism. "Elena wasn't talking about a symbol, Julian. She called him Alex. And the man in that casket... he had Alex's build, his hair... Julian, where is Alex? Where is the man I was supposed to marry before he mysteriously vanished two years ago?"

The silence that followed was heavy and suffocating. The gentle hum of the estate's central air conditioning seemed deafening. Julian lowered his glass slowly to the vanity, his easy charm evaporating like mist under a hot sun. His eyes darkened, taking on a cold, calculating edge that Clara had never seen in all the months of their courtship.

"You need to be very careful what you ask, Clara," Julian said softly, his voice dropping an octave into a tone that sent a shiver straight down her spine. "You are Mrs. Miller now. Your loyalty is to me, not to a convicted criminal who destroyed everything she touched."
