Chapter 1

The heavy crystal chandeliers of the grand reception hall trembled as the massive double doors crashed open against the oak paneling. White floral arches, meticulously arranged by elite designers to frame the happiest day of two lives, suddenly felt like a suffocating cage. Elena Vance stood chest-heaving in the center of the aisle, her bright orange prison jumpsuit stark against the sea of pastel evening gowns worn by terrified wedding guests. Her dark hair, usually neat, was pulled back in a tangled mess. Bruises darkened her cheekbones, and fresh tear tracks cut through the dust and sweat coating her skin. She had run miles through the damp woods behind the venue, her white prison sneakers caked in mud, driven entirely by a desperate, agonizing pulse of adrenaline.

"Stop the wedding!" Elena screamed, her voice cracking with a raw, desperate agony that pierced through the frozen silence of the hall.

Time seemed to stutter. Rows of wealthy guests turned around, gasping, shrinking away from the escaped convict who had materialized out of a nightmare. At the altar, bathed in ethereal candlelight, stood Julian Miller in a sharp black tuxedo, his handsome face instantly draining of all color. Beside him, Clara Vance—Elena’s own younger sister—stood paralyzed inside a voluminous white silk wedding gown, her face hidden partly behind a pristine lace veil, her eyes wide with undisguised terror.

Elena did not care about the stares, the whispers, or the security guards beginning to stir in the back rows. Her frantic gaze locked onto the center of the altar, where an object completely foreign to any traditional ceremony rested upon a velvet-draped pedestal: a polished white wedding casket, closed tightly and adorned with delicate white roses.

Without breaking stride, Elena bolted down the aisle, her orange fabric rustling loudly. She shoved past a row of ornate folding chairs, her breath coming in ragged, painful gasps. The guests scattered like frightened birds. Julian took a violent step backward, his hands trembling as he stared at the woman he had buried deep within his memory—and legally, deep within the state penitentiary system.

"Let me go, he's still alive!" Elena yelled, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and overwhelming sorrow.

She reached the altar, the scent of expensive perfume mixing with the metallic tang of fear. Julian raised a hand, his mouth opening and closing without sound, caught between the instinct to flee and the desperate need to maintain control of the chaotic room. Elena ignored him entirely, her vision tunneling down to the gleaming white wood of the casket. She dropped heavily to her knees on the polished marble floor, the impact sending a sharp jolt through her bruised joints, and reached into the deep pocket of her orange jumpsuit. Her fingers wrapped around a heavy, industrial metal wrench she had stolen from a maintenance shed near the prison perimeter.
