Chapter 11

Back at the Miller estate, Julian sat in his spacious home office, the morning sunlight streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the manicured gardens. He swirled a glass of expensive bourbon, staring intently at the glowing screen of his secure laptop. A high-priority security alert pulsed in the corner of the display: Encrypted Drive Accessed - External Sync Detected.
Julian’s face went completely bloodless. He slammed the crystal glass down onto the mahogany desk, spilling amber liquid across the polished wood. He had checked his wall safe just that morning; the backup drive was gone. And the only person who had access to the master suite during that time was Clara.
The heavy oak door of the office swung open softly. Clara stood on the threshold, wearing a simple silk robe, her face pale and drawn. She had not slept a wink since the wedding. The chilling words Elena had spoken at the altar, combined with Julian’s defensive hostility afterward, had pushed her to conduct her own quiet investigation of the estate's private records.
"Where is it, Julian?" Clara asked, her voice steady and devoid of its usual warmth.
Julian slowly stood up from his leather executive chair, smoothing down the front of his designer shirt with deliberate, chilling calm. He forced a strained, gentle smile to his face, stepping around the desk toward her. "Where is what, sweetheart? You look exhausted. Why don't you sit down and let me—"
"Don't call me that," Clara interrupted, stepping backward out of his reach. She raised her tablet computer, the screen displaying a scanned PDF of an offshore corporate account transfer signed by Julian Miller on the exact date of Alex's disappearance, funneling millions from her family's trust directly into a shell company controlled by Warden Vance. "I found the physical ledger in your private floor safe. I found the payoff receipts. And I know why you had a stranger's body in a casket at our wedding—it was a sick insurance stunt to declare Alex legally dead and lock down the estate before anyone could audit the accounts."
Julian stopped moving. The illusion of the charming, devoted husband vanished completely, replaced by the cold, calculating predator Elena had known all along. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.
"You shouldn't have gone looking, Clara," Julian said softly, his voice losing all pretense of warmth. "You had everything you could ever want. Wealth, status, protection. Why ruin it all for a ghost?"
May you like
"He wasn't a ghost, Julian!" Clara cried, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "He was my sister's fiancé! And you murdered him in cold blood, just like you destroyed Elena's life to steal our father's company!"
Julian sighed, running a hand through his neatly styled hair. He glanced casually toward the heavy office door, where two private security guards stood waiting in the hallway, alerted by the raised voices. "It’s a shame, really," Julian murmured, reaching slowly into his jacket pocket. "You always were far too curious for your own good, Clara. Just like your sister."
