Chapter 12

Before Clara could turn toward the door, Julian lunged forward with surprising speed, grabbing her wrist and twisting the tablet out of her grip. It shattered against the hardwood floor, the screen cracking into a spiderweb of dead pixels. Clara screamed, pulling back with all her might, but Julian’s grip was like a vise.

"Lock her in the west wing guest suite," Julian commanded without looking back as the two heavy-set security guards rushed into the office. "And make sure her phone is confiscated. Nobody leaves this estate until I resolve this mess."

The guards grabbed Clara by the arms, lifting her off her feet as she kicked and screamed, fighting against them with a desperate fury born of utter betrayal. They dragged her down the long, opulent hallway, kicking open the heavy oak door of the isolated guest suite and shoving her inside before turning the deadbolt with a resounding click.

Left alone in the quiet office, Julian’s hands trembled as he typed furiously on his laptop. The public watchdog server had already received the compressed archive from the prison terminal. News outlets were beginning to pick up the metadata trace. Within hours, federal investigators would be knocking on his door with warrants for embezzlement, corporate fraud, and murder.

He needed to run. He had millions stashed in overseas accounts, but he needed his passport, currently locked in his downtown penthouse safe. Julian grabbed his car keys and strode out of the office, heading for the underground garage.

Meanwhile, inside the maximum-security wing of the state penitentiary, alarms began to blare. Not a prison break siren, but a high-priority federal override alert. Warden Vance rushed out of his private office, his face slick with sweat, as a team of federal marshals flanked by state troopers marched down the corridor with federal arrest warrants in hand.

"Warden Vance, you are under arrest for accessory to murder, obstruction of justice, and accepting corporate bribes," the lead federal marshal announced, snapping heavy steel cuffs onto the warden’s wrists before he could even reach for his desk drawer.

Elena stood at the reinforced glass of her cell door, watching the commotion unfold down the hall. A slow, profound sense of vindication washed over her. The marshals unlocked her cell door, the heavy steel swinging open to reveal freedom not as a desperate escape through muddy woods, but as a hard-won triumph of truth over deception.

As the lead marshal uncuffed her and handed her a simple brown paper bag containing her personal effects, Elena looked up with a steady, resolute gaze. "My sister," Elena said urgently. "Julian Miller has her trapped at his estate. We have to move right now before he runs."
