Chapter 4

The wailing sirens swelled outside, slicing through the tense silence of the reception hall like a blade. Red and blue emergency lights washed in through the tall arched windows, painting the pristine white floral arches in alternating shades of crimson and azure. The illusion of fairy-tale romance was completely gone, replaced by the harsh, clinical reality of an impending police raid.
Elena remained on her knees beside the open white casket, her gaze locked on the stranger resting inside the satin lining. The stranger’s face was calm, entirely peaceful, a stark contrast to the swirling chaos erupting around the altar. She reached out with a trembling, bruised hand and lightly touched the lapel of the dead man's tuxedo. There was no wedding ring on his finger, no personal effects, just a blank slate of a man dressed up to play a grim role in an elaborate deception.
"Elena Vance! Stay where you are! Put your hands where we can see them!" A harsh voice boomed from the double doors as several local police officers rushed into the hall, their heavy combat boots thudding against the marble. Drawn guns cut through the air, their black metal barrels catching the harsh light of the flashing sirens.
Julian immediately raised his hands, stepping smoothly into the role of the victimized groom. His posture shifted from panic to injured dignity with practiced ease. "Officer, thank God," Julian called out, his voice smooth and carrying effortlessly across the room. "This escaped convict broke into our wedding, vandalized private property, and threatened my bride. She is completely unhinged. Arrest her immediately."
Clara stood frozen near the altar, clutching her wedding dress with white-knuckled intensity. She stared at Julian, a flicker of profound doubt crossing her features for the first time. The man she had loved, the man who had supposedly rescued her from the grief of her sister's downfall and her former fiancé's disappearance, suddenly looked like a stranger wearing a very convincing mask.
"He's lying!" Elena screamed, trying to scramble to her feet as two officers lunged forward, grabbing her arms and forcing her down against the cold floor with rough efficiency. Steel cuffs snapped around her wrists with a sharp, final click that echoed through the hall. "Look inside the casket! That isn't Alex! Julian set me up for a murder that never even happened!"
The officers hesitated for a split second, glancing down at the open white casket. The sight of a corpse displayed prominently at a wedding reception brought them up short, their professional training momentarily derailed by the sheer bizarre nature of the scene. One officer nudged his partner, pointing his flashlight beam directly into the pale face of the man in the tuxedo.

"What is the meaning of this?" the lead officer demanded, keeping his weapon trained on Elena while glaring across the altar at Julian.
Julian stepped forward, offering a thin, controlled smile that did not reach his eyes. "It’s a morbid art piece, Officer. A tragic commemoration of a lost loved one. My late business partner passed away recently, and my eccentric, deeply unstable sister-in-law here has completely lost her mind regarding the circumstances. As you can see, she escaped from the county correctional facility just hours ago."
