Chapter 10

The amber light of the library monitor illuminated the dark circles under Elena’s eyes as she clicked on the video file labeled Cape Mendocino_Final. The progress bar crawled forward for a tense second before the screen flickered to life.
The footage was grainy, shot from a high-angle security camera mounted near a secluded rocky cliff overlooking the churning Pacific Ocean at Cape Mendocino. The timestamp in the corner read two years prior—the exact night Alex had supposedly vanished in a tragic boating accident.
Elena leaned in close to the monitor, her breath fogging the glass. On the screen, a sleek motorboat was moored against a private wooden dock. Two figures stood near the edge of the water. One was easily recognizable by his silhouette and posture: Julian Miller. The other figure was Alex, struggling against a sudden, violent shove. There was no storm, no accidental capsizing, no heroic search and rescue effort. Julian had pushed Alex off the rocky ledge into the dark, freezing surf below.
As Elena watched the horrifying scene replay in silent agony, a second figure stepped out from the shadows of a nearby boathouse—a man wearing a heavy security uniform, helping Julian secure the area and dispose of Alex’s personal effects. The man’s face was partially illuminated by a cigarette lighter. It was none of other than Warden Vance.
Elena’s hand flew to her mouth to stifle a gasp. The realization hit her with sickening clarity: Julian hadn't just framed her for corporate embezzlement and murder; he had bought off the entire local correctional and judicial apparatus, ensuring that she would remain locked away forever while he inherited her family’s fortune and married her sister.
"Time's up, Vance. Get off the terminal."
The harsh voice of the library guard broke through her shock. Elena reacted on pure instinct. With shaking fingers, she hit the command to send a compressed archive of the entire folder directly to an encrypted public watchdog server, wiping the local cache instantly just as the guard’s heavy hand slammed down on the top of the monitor.
"Hey! What did I tell you about unauthorized file access?" the guard barked, yanking the flash drive out of the USB port and shoving Elena back against the wooden chair.
May you like
"I'm done," Elena said quietly, a grim, dangerous smile touching the corners of her bruised lips. "You can take the drive. But the truth is already out there."
The guard frowned, looking suspiciously at the blank amber screen before hauling Elena up by her orange jumpsuit and marching her back to solitary confinement. But the fear that had gripped her for two years was gone, replaced by a cold, unshakeable determination. Julian and Warden Vance thought they had built an impenetrable fortress of lies, but the foundation was already beginning to crack.
