Chapter 8 - The Total Blackout

The sudden plunging of the hallway and classroom monitors into absolute darkness sent a wave of suffocating dread through the entire room. The faint mechanical hum of the ventilation system seemed to die away, leaving behind a heavy, unnatural silence that felt like the bottom of the ocean. Leo stared up at the dead camera housing in horror as the little red and green lights failed to flicker back to life. The corporate agent slipped his smartphone back into his suit pocket with a slow, deliberate motion, his expression remaining as rigid and impassive as carved stone.

"All network nodes in this wing have been routed to an off-site proxy server," the agent said calmly, his voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel. "As far as the district database is concerned, this classroom has been vacant for the last four hours."

"You can't just delete a student's existence like that!" Leo protested, his voice cracking as fear finally overtook his defiance. "My mother knows I'm at school! She's coming to pick me up at five o'clock!"

"Your mother received an automated text message fifteen minutes ago stating that your after-school detention had been extended by two hours," Ms. Vance said, her confidence seemingly returning now that the corporate backup had arrived to take control of the situation. "She is currently sitting in traffic on the interstate, miles away from this building."

Leo felt the blood drain from his face as he realized how thoroughly trapped he truly was. Every single escape route, digital or physical, had been systematically sealed off by adults who viewed him not as a child to be protected, but as a liability to be managed and disposed of. He looked around the dimly lit classroom for anything he could use as a weapon or a distraction, his eyes landing once more on the wooden ruler resting near the baseboard.

"You're breaking the law," Leo said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper as he took a cautious step toward the fallen ruler. "Even the school board can't cover up something like this."

"The school board doesn't exist anymore, kid. The corporate board owns this property now," the agent replied, taking a heavy step forward and blocking Leo's path to the exit. "And we protect our financial investments by any means necessary."

Without warning, Leo dove forward, ignoring the aching pain in his elbow and snatching the wooden ruler off the floor. He swung it blindly toward the agent's knees, catching the man off guard and causing him to stumble forward with a muffled grunt of surprise. Seizing the opening, Leo scrambled past the agent's legs and bolted straight through the open doorway into the pitch-black hallway.

"Catch him!" Ms. Vance screamed from inside the classroom, her voice laced with sudden, frantic panic. "Don't let him reach the main stairwell!"

The heavy footsteps of the corporate agent came thundering after him down the corridor, closing the distance with terrifying speed. Leo ran as fast as his legs could carry him, his sneakers slapping wildly against the floor in the absolute darkness. He rounded the corner toward the administrative wing, hoping against hope that the main exit doors downstairs were still unlocked and accessible.

Suddenly, a heavy hand clamped down brutally over his shoulder, spinning him around and slamming him hard against the cold concrete wall of the hallway. Leo gasped as the wind was knocked violently out of his lungs, dropping the wooden ruler as his fingers clawed uselessly at the rough fabric of the agent's suit jacket.
