Chapter 2 - The Corridor's Echo

Principal Miller stepped slowly into the quiet classroom, his eyes darting between Ms. Vance and the trembling young boy standing beside the battered wooden desk. The heavy oak door swung shut with a dull thud that seemed to echo through the empty hallway, cutting off the distant sound of recess laughter. Leo kept his head down, clutching the edge of his denim overalls while tears dried on his warm cheeks. Ms. Vance immediately adjusted her mustard-yellow button-up shirt, smoothing the fabric with a practiced, nervous gesture of absolute authority.

"Is there a problem in here, Ms. Vance? I heard shouting all the way down in the administrative wing," Principal Miller asked, his voice low and measured.

"Nothing we can't handle, Principal Miller. Just another typical display of insubordination from Leo," Ms. Vance replied smoothly, tapping the wooden ruler gently against her palm. "He refused to remain at his workstation during quiet reading hour and then became verbally combative when corrected."

"That is a complete lie! She cornered me and wouldn't let me leave!" Leo blurted out, stepping away from the desk.

"That is enough, Leo. Adults are speaking," Principal Miller interrupted, holding up a single silencing hand. He looked closely at the teacher. "You know our policy on physical intimidation, Angela. I hope that ruler was merely being used as a pointer."

"Of course, Principal Miller. Purely instructional," Ms. Vance said, offering a tight, unconvincing smile that did not reach her cold eyes. "Perhaps a call home is in order. His mother needs to understand that his disruptive patterns are escalating beyond classroom control."

"My mom works double shifts to pay for my clothes. She doesn't need your calls!" Leo shouted, his voice cracking with exhaustion and fear.

"Leo, go sit in the hallway bench immediately. We will discuss your disciplinary action in a moment," the principal ordered, pointing toward the open door.

Leo hesitated, looking back and forth between the two adults who seemed allied against him in every possible way. He dragged his feet slowly across the scuffed linoleum floor, stepping out into the cold, gray-lit corridor. The heavy door clicked shut behind him, plunging him into a sudden, suffocating silence that felt heavier than any spoken word. He sat down on the hard wooden bench, staring blankly at the opposite wall where a row of faded student art projects hung crookedly.

From inside the room, muffled voices rose again, sharp and urgent, though the heavy insulation of the door made the specific words impossible to distinguish clearly. Leo pressed his ear against the cool painted wood, trying desperately to catch any fragment of the conversation regarding his fate. Suddenly, the sharp click of a cassette tape mechanism echoed from the ceiling corner directly above his head, accompanied by a faint, mechanical whirring sound. Leo jerked backward in surprise, looking up to see the small red indicator light on the wall-mounted security camera blinking erratically in the gloom.
