Chapter 7 - The Heavy Boots

The rhythmic sound of heavy boots striking the concrete hallway floor grew louder and closer with every passing second, echoing like thunder through the empty school wing. Ms. Vance froze instantly, releasing her grip on Leo's chest and spinning around to face the open doorway with a look of sheer, unadulterated panic. Leo slumped against the desk, gasping desperately for air as he rubbed his sore chest and watched the threshold for whatever was coming next. The boots stopped abruptly just outside the classroom, followed by the heavy sound of someone leaning their weight against the doorframe.

"Angela? Are you still in there with the boy?" a deep, unfamiliar voice rumbled from the corridor, carrying a tone of cold, bureaucratic authority that belonged to neither Principal Miller nor any regular staff member.

"We are just... finalizing the disciplinary paperwork," Ms. Vance called back, her voice shaking slightly despite her best efforts to sound calm and composed. "Everything is completely under control out here."

"Principal Miller sent me down to collect the memory unit and clear the hallway," the stranger replied, taking a slow step across the threshold into the dim classroom. "The district board isn't happy about these security leaks. They want the entire server wiped before the night shift arrives."

Leo squinted through the gloom to get a clear look at the man standing in the doorway, and his stomach dropped instantly into a bottomless pit. The man wore a crisp black corporate suit that clashed violently with the gritty environment of an elementary school, and pinned to his lapel was a silver security badge bearing an unfamiliar corporate logo. This wasn't a school district employee; this was a private contractor hired by the corporate education management firm that had recently taken over the district's administrative operations.

"The boy tried to access the terminal," Ms. Vance said quickly, pointing an accusing finger at Leo while stepping defensively toward the corporate agent. "He saw the archive files. He knows about the performance quotas."

The man in the black suit turned his cold, calculating gaze toward Leo, his eyes scanning the young boy from head to toe with clinical detachment. He reached into his suit jacket slowly, pulling out a small black leather case that looked nothing like standard school property. Leo backed away slowly until his legs hit the edge of the student desk, his mind racing for any possible escape route through the windows or back toward the courtyard.

"Is that true, young man?" the agent asked, his voice completely devoid of human warmth or emotion. "Did you look at files that do not belong to you?"

"She framed me! She edited the video to make it look like I attacked her!" Leo shouted, his voice echoing off the bare walls of the classroom with desperate intensity.

"Children under ten are notoriously unreliable witnesses," the man replied coldly, taking another measured step into the room as he unbuttoned his suit jacket. "Especially when they have a documented history of behavioral disruptions and academic failure."

"Check the security feed! The live camera recorded everything from the hallway!" Leo yelled, pointing frantically toward the ceiling corner where the green LED light pulsed steadily.

The corporate agent glanced up briefly at the camera, then pulled a small smartphone from his pocket and tapped the screen twice. Instantly, the green indicator light on the wall flickered, turned yellow for a fraction of a second, and then went completely dark.
