Chapter 3 - The Blinking Red Light

The tiny red LED light on the security camera pulsed in a rhythmic, hypnotic pattern that sent a cold shiver down Leo's spine. It felt as though the inanimate machine possessed a living awareness, watching his every move from its high, unreachable perch in the corner of the hallway. He remembered Ms. Vance's chilling words inside the classroom about the audio recording capabilities of the surveillance system. If the camera captured sound as well as movement, then every single plea, every unfair accusation, and every desperate threat was safely stored on a hard drive somewhere in the school's basement security office.

Leo stood up slowly from the wooden bench, his sneakers squeaking softly against the polished floor. He stretched his small arms upward, testing the distance between his fingertips and the bottom edge of the metal housing, but he was far too short to reach it. He needed a chair, or perhaps a taller vantage point, but any movement near the administrative wing would immediately draw Principal Miller's suspicious gaze. The muffled argument inside the classroom suddenly ceased, replaced by the unmistakable sound of footsteps approaching the heavy wooden door from the inside.

Panic flared in Leo's chest; he scrambled backward and clumsily re-seated himself on the bench just as the doorknob began to turn. Principal Miller emerged first, his expression unreadable, followed closely by Ms. Vance holding her wooden ruler like a baton. Neither of them looked down at the young boy as they walked past him toward the main office corridor, whispering urgently to one another in hushed tones.

"Wait here until the final bell rings, Leo," Principal Miller commanded over his shoulder without breaking his stride. "Do not attempt to enter the classroom or leave this hallway."

The adults rounded the corner, disappearing from view and leaving Leo alone once more in the long, silent corridor. He waited for ten agonizing seconds, listening intently for the distant chime of the office telephone or the opening of a file cabinet. When the coast was completely clear, he crept stealthily toward the classroom door, noticing for the first time that it had not been latched shut all the way. A narrow sliver of yellow light spilled out onto the floor, cutting across the darkness like a beacon of forbidden opportunity.

Leo pushed the door open with a gentle finger, slipping inside the empty room like a shadow. The air smelled of chalk dust and old paper, a familiar scent that was now tainted by the heavy tension of the afternoon's confrontation. He darted directly toward Ms. Vance's large oak desk, knowing that her computer terminal and physical planner remained unsecured on the blotter. His small fingers flew across the keyboard, attempting to wake the sleeping monitor from its power-saving sleep mode without making a sound.

The screen flickered to life with a blinding white flash, illuminating the darkened classroom and revealing a blinking password prompt box. Leo stared at the blinking cursor in mounting despair, realizing he had no idea what secret combination protected the teacher's digital files. Suddenly, a low mechanical beep sounded from the corner of the ceiling, and the classroom's internal security monitor automatically powered on to display a live feed of the very hallway he had just vacated.
