Chapter 6 - The Master Remote

The small black remote control in Ms. Vance’s hand featured a single, glowing blue button that pulsed with an unnatural, electronic heartbeat. Leo’s eyes widened as he recognized the device from a technology seminar poster hanging in the school library—it was a localized hardware override unit capable of instantly wiping hard drives and disabling security nodes. If she pressed that button, every single piece of incriminating evidence on the server, including the edited video and the live audio feed, would vanish into digital oblivion forever.
"You can't do that," Leo whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of fear and profound anger. "The district will know something happened to the files."
"The district office gave me this override code, you foolish boy," Ms. Vance replied, her voice dropping to a harsh, conspiratorial whisper. "Do you honestly believe a simple elementary school teacher operates in a vacuum? We have quotas to meet, funding to secure, and problem children to relocate before the state audit next month."
She took a slow step forward, her mustard-yellow shirt catching the dim courtyard light as she raised the remote toward the ceiling camera. Leo knew he had mere seconds to act before all proof of his innocence was erased from the school's digital memory banks forever. Without stopping to calculate the danger, he lunged sideways, grabbing a heavy stack of student textbooks off the nearest desk and hurling them directly at the teacher. The books struck her shoulder with a dull thud, knocking her off balance and causing the remote to slip from her grasp.
The device clattered across the scuffed floorboards, spinning wildly before coming to a rest near the base of the front whiteboard. Both of them scrambled desperately across the linoleum, their hands clawing frantically at the smooth plastic surface of the emergency override unit. Leo’s smaller fingers reached the device a fraction of a second faster, his palm slapping down hard over the glowing blue button to block any potential activation attempt.
"Give me that back, you ungrateful little brat!" Ms. Vance shrieked, her professional composure completely vanishing as she grabbed a handful of his short curly hair.
Leo cried out in pain, dropping the remote as he instinctively reached up to protect his head from her aggressive tugging. She kicked the device away with her foot, sending it sliding across the room toward the open doorway where it vanished into the dark hallway. Panting heavily, she pinned him against the side of the desk with her forearm pressed firmly across his chest, cutting off his air supply.
"You have caused me nothing but trouble since the first day of the semester," she hissed into his ear, her breath smelling faintly of bitter coffee and mint. "This is where your little rebellion comes to a permanent, quiet end."

Before she could tighten her grip or reach for the wooden ruler on the floor, a sharp, metallic chime echoed through the hallway outside the classroom. The sound was instantly followed by the heavy, echoing trudge of steel-toed boots approaching the door at a rapid, unyielding pace.
