Chapter 4 - The Digital Ghost

On the glowing monitor above the chalkboard, Leo watched in utter disbelief as the hallway camera feed shifted angles with a mechanical groan. The grainy black-and-white image showed an empty corridor, but in the bottom corner of the screen, a small timestamp overlay began flashing red. Below the clock, a text prompt blinked rapidly, reading: "ARCHIVE ACCESS GRANTED: USER ADMIN." Leo froze, his hand hovering inches from the keyboard as his mind raced to comprehend what he was seeing on the classroom display.

Ms. Vance had not logged out of the master administrative network before leaving the room with the principal. The system had automatically recognized her credentials from the office terminal and synced with the classroom console, leaving the entire facility's surveillance database completely wide open to anyone standing at her desk. Leo swallowed hard, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird as he reached out with a trembling finger to click on the folder labeled "CLASSROOM_04_ARCHIVE."

A drop-down menu materialized instantly, listing hundreds of video files categorized by date, hour, and minute going back several academic years. He scrolled frantically past weeks of mundane lectures, quiet study halls, and empty rooms until his eyes locked onto a file timestamped from earlier that very afternoon. The file name was chillingly simple: "INCIDENT_14_32_RULER." Without pausing to consider the severe consequences of his actions, Leo double-clicked the file icon, praying the audio track was intact.

A media player window popped open in the center of the screen, buffering for two agonizing seconds before the video began to play smoothly. There he was on the screen, standing beside the exact desk he was touching, shrinking back as Ms. Vance towered over him with the wooden ruler raised high. But as he watched the digital playback unfold, a horrifying discrepancy made his breath catch painfully in his throat. The video showed Ms. Vance striking the wooden desk with tremendous force, but the audio track was completely out of sync by nearly three full seconds.

Even worse, the audio of him shouting "Go ahead then! Hit me!" had been spliced into the timeline from a completely different conversation earlier in the week. Someone had deliberately edited the digital archive to make his defensive outbursts look like unprovoked aggression before handing the evidence over to the administration. Leo gasped aloud, realizing that this wasn't just a harsh disciplinary dispute; it was a premeditated setup designed to justify his permanent expulsion from the school district.

Before he could click the download button to save a copy of the manipulated footage to a flash drive, the classroom door swung violently open. Ms. Vance stood in the threshold, her face drained of all color, staring directly at the glowing monitor reflecting in Leo's wide, terrified eyes.
