Chapter 5 - Caught in the Act

"What do you think you are doing, you miserable little thief?" Ms. Vance hissed, lunging across the room with terrifying speed.
Leo scrambled backward from the chair, tripping over his own denim overalls and hitting the linoleum floor hard. The wooden ruler flew through the air, clattering loudly against the baseboard as the teacher slammed her hand down on the keyboard. With a few frantic keystrokes, she closed the video player and forced the computer terminal into an immediate, secure hibernation mode. The room plunged back into deep shadow, save for the sickly yellow light filtering through the vertical blinds from the dreary courtyard outside.
"You edited the tape! I saw what you did on the screen!" Leo yelled, scrambling to his feet while rubbing his bruised elbow. "You framed me!"
"Shut your filthy mouth!" Ms. Vance snarled, her professional veneer completely shattering to reveal a desperate, furious woman cornered by her own corruption. "Nobody will ever believe the word of an undisciplined child over a twenty-year veteran educator. Who are they going to trust? You or me?"
"Principal Miller will check the server logs! He'll see you tampered with the digital evidence!" Leo retorted, backing away toward the open classroom door.
"Principal Miller authorized the disciplinary transfer yesterday morning, long before you ever walked into this room," Ms. Vance whispered coldly, stepping into his path to block the exit. "The district needs to clear out the low-performing students to secure the state funding grant. You were simply the most convenient candidate on the roster."
Leo stopped dead in his tracks, the chilling reality of the systemic conspiracy washing over him like freezing water. It wasn't just one angry teacher; the entire administration was actively purging struggling students to manipulate school performance metrics for financial gain. He looked past her shoulder toward the hallway, noticing that the security camera indicator light had suddenly turned from blinking red to a solid, unblinking emerald green. Someone in the remote district office was actively watching the confrontation unfold live on their central monitoring console right at this very moment.
"You can't hide it anymore," Leo said, pointing a steady finger directly at the ceiling lens above them. "They're watching us right now. The real district supervisors can see everything you're doing."
Ms. Vance laughed, a high-pitched, manic sound that echoed harshly off the bare walls of the empty classroom. She turned slowly to look up at the blinking green light, her expression turning into a strange, triumphant smirk that defied all logic.

"Let them watch," she whispered, reaching slowly into her mustard-yellow shirt pocket and pulling out a small, encrypted master remote control. "They aren't recording you for my termination, Leo. They're recording you for your disappearance."
