Chapter 12 - The Parking Lot Monitor

The glowing computer monitor at the far end of the freezing archive vault cast an eerie amber light across Leo's tear-stained face. On the large screen, a live security camera feed displayed the school's administrative parking lot upstairs, bathed in the sickly yellow glow of a flickering overhead streetlamp. A single, dusty sedan sat parked near the back fence, its engine idling quietly with exhaust pluming into the chilly evening air. Leo pressed his hands against the smooth glass of the server rack, his eyes fixed on the passenger-side window of the car where a familiar silhouette sat motionless in the front seat.
"Mom..." Leo whispered, his voice catching in his throat as a fresh wave of panic and sorrow washed over him.
It was her car. She had actually arrived, just as the corporate agent had claimed, sitting patiently in the parking lot while unaware of the nightmare unfolding beneath her feet. Leo looked frantically around the server room for a microphone, a intercom button, or any peripheral device that might allow him to transmit a distress signal up to the administrative network. His eyes locked onto a small desk beneath the main monitor, where a vintage desktop microphone sat plugged into an open audio port on the central processing unit.
He rushed across the metal grating, ignoring the biting cold that chilled him to the bone, and fell to his knees in front of the terminal. With his hands still tightly bound behind his back by the cruel plastic zip-ties, he realized he couldn't even reach the keyboard or type a message to the outside world. Frustration and despair threatened to overwhelm him completely, but as he stared at the microphone resting inches from his face, an idea sparked in his desperate mind.
Using his teeth, Leo grabbed the thick rubber cable attached to the microphone base and pulled downward with all his remaining strength. The cable resisted stubbornly for a few agonizing seconds before the plastic connector snapped out of its port with a sharp, metallic pop. He dragged the microphone across the metal desk using his chin and shoulders until it fell off the edge and landed softly in his lap. Working furiously with his fingers behind his back, he managed to wedge the toggle switch into the open-air broadcast position using the sharp edge of the metal desk frame.
"Mom! Can you hear me? Mom, please look up! They lied to you!" Leo shouted into the open microphone, his voice echoing loudly through the massive network of subterranean server speakers.
On the monitor screen upstairs, the security feed showed the sedan's brake lights flash brightly as the driver inside suddenly reacted to the sudden burst of audio. The car door swung open, and a woman stepped out onto the asphalt, looking around in absolute confusion as she searched the empty parking lot for the source of the voice.
"Leo? Where are you?" her faint, distorted voice drifted down through the air vents from the administrative floor above, carried directly into the archive vault through the central cooling system.
"I'm in the basement! In the server room! They locked me in!" Leo screamed into the microphone, his voice cracking with raw emotion and desperate hope.

Before his mother could take another step toward the school entrance, the security monitor screen suddenly flickered violently and cut to black. A loud, echoing electronic tone chimed through the subterranean room, followed by an automated synthetic voice announcing: "EXTERNAL AUDIO BROADCAST TERMINATED BY SYSTEM ADMIN."
