Chapter 10 - The Subterranean Silence

The absolute darkness of the basement stairway felt like a physical weight pressing down on Leo's chest, making every breath feel shallow and labored. He stood frozen on the second concrete step, his hands still bound tightly behind his back by the unforgiving plastic zip-ties that cut into his wrists. Above him, the heavy metal door remained locked tight, silencing any hope that their descent had been noticed by anyone else in the building. The agent's heavy footsteps clicked methodically down the concrete stairs behind him, guiding the young boy into the unseen depths of the sub-level utility corridors.
"Keep moving, Leo. Do not stop and do not test my patience," the agent's voice echoed flatly off the damp stone walls, sounding unnaturally loud in the confined space.
"Where are you taking me? There's nothing down here except old boilers and junk," Leo whispered, his voice shaking with a mixture of terror and bitter defiance.
"We are taking you to a secure holding area where the district's digital audit logs are physically backed up," the agent replied without breaking his steady stride. "Once we verify that you haven't transmitted any of those files to an external device, we will contact your mother to pick you up from the rear loading dock."
"You're lying," Leo said, stopping abruptly on the landing and forcing the agent to bump directly into him. "You said my mom was stuck in traffic earlier. Now you're saying she's coming here. Which lie is it?"
The agent stopped behind him in the darkness, the silence stretching between them for several long, agonizing seconds before the man finally spoke again. "Your mother is already outside, Leo. She arrived five minutes ago after receiving our priority notification."
Leo's heart leaped into his throat at the news, a sudden surge of desperate hope fighting through the overwhelming fear that had paralyzed him moments before. "My mom is here? Let me talk to her! Let me go upstairs right now!"
"She is waiting in the administrative parking lot, signing the final paperwork regarding your indefinite suspension," the agent continued, his voice cold and devoid of any human empathy. "She has already agreed that your behavioral issues require a specialized facility far away from this district."
"That's a lie! My mom would never sign me away!" Leo screamed, thrashing violently against the plastic zip-ties until the sharp edges broke the skin on his wrists, drawing a tiny bead of warm blood.
"She signed the initial enrollment waiver on your very first day of school," Ms. Vance chimed in coldly from the top of the landing, having followed them down the dark stairs. "That document grants the administration full legal proxy over your placement in the event of a severe disciplinary infraction."

Before Leo could process the horrifying legal trap that had been laid for him since day one, a sudden, sharp electronic beep echoed from the utility wall beside them. A bank of emergency backup lights flickered on overhead, casting a harsh, sickly fluorescent glow over a heavy steel door marked with a biohazard warning symbol. The agent grabbed Leo firmly by the shoulder, shoving him roughly toward the reinforced steel threshold as a heavy electronic lock began to cycle with a loud, mechanical hum.
