Chapter 9 - The Gable Escape

The splintering wood of the hallway door echoed like rolling thunder, leaving zero margin for debate.

Mark grabbed Elena by the shoulders, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute, unyielding authority.

"Go. Now," Mark commanded, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed emotion. "Protect Lily. That's the only priority that matters."

Elena swallowed the lump in her throat, a single tear escaping down her cheek before she nodded with fierce resolution.

She turned and scrambled across the dusty floorboards toward the far corner of the attic where the small wooden gable hatch was located.

Victor holstered his pistol temporarily, reaching up to unlatch the rusted metal hook holding the exterior ventilation door shut against the autumn wind.

With a sharp shove, Victor pushed the wooden panel outward, flooding the dim attic with crisp, cold evening air and the distant sound of chirping crickets.

"After you, madam," Victor said smoothly, gesturing for Elena to climb out onto the narrow metal maintenance ladder bolted to the exterior siding.

Elena didn't hesitate. She hoisted herself through the opening, the cold wind whipping her dark hair across her face as she stepped carefully onto the rungs.

Mark turned his attention back to the attic entrance, grabbing a heavy wooden storage crate and dragging it violently across the floor to block the trapdoor opening.

Heavy boots slammed onto the final set of stairs, accompanied by angry, muffled shouts as the intruders forced their way upward.

"Miller! We know you're up there!" a gravelly voice bellowed from just outside the attic door. "Hand over the drive and nobody gets hurt!"

Mark didn't answer. He threw his full weight against the wooden crate, wedging it firmly beneath the overhanging roof beams to create a makeshift barricade.

A heavy impact slammed against the attic door, splintering the frame and sending shockwaves through the wooden floorboards.

Behind him, Victor was already halfway through the gable hatch, holding one hand out to help guide Elena down the steep exterior ladder.

"Mark! Move!" Victor called out urgently over the rising noise of the forced entry.

Mark cast one final look at the barricaded door, then turned and scrambled backward through the narrow ventilation opening into the cool night air.

The wind bit sharply at his face as he grabbed the icy metal rungs of the ladder, beginning the dizzying descent down to the dark backyard patio below.

Above them, the attic door finally gave way with a deafening crash, wood fragments flying everywhere as heavy intruders poured into the dusty space.

Mark dropped the final three feet to the concrete patio, landing heavily on his knees before scrambling back up to his feet.

Elena was already standing near the edge of the lawn, clutching little Lily tightly in her arms while panting heavily.

"Are you okay?" Mark demanded, rushing over and pulling them both into a protective, desperate embrace.

"We're fine," Elena gasped, clutching the small data cartridge in her other hand like a lifeline. "We need to get to the car before they realize we escaped through the roof."

Victor dropped down gracefully from the ladder behind them, adjusting his coat with a practiced flick of his wrists.

"My vehicle is parked three houses down," Victor noted calmly, scanning the treeline of the quiet suburban street with professional wariness. "If we move quickly, we can reach it before they circle around to the back."

Mark nodded, his eyes scanning the dark windows of their own home as the silhouette of an armed man appeared briefly in the second-floor gable window above.

Without a word, the small group broke into a fast, silent sprint across the damp lawn toward the safety of the darkened street.
