Chapter 2 - The Ghost of the Past

The metallic clicking noise echoed like a ticking bomb inside the hollow wall cavity, freezing everyone in their tracks.
Mark pulled his face back from the hole, his eyes darting from the dark steel safe to Elena’s pale, sweat-beaded face.
The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the shallow, frightened breathing of little Lily, who clutched the hem of Elena’s dark pants.
Elena swallowed hard, her fingers nervously twisting the fabric of her cream-colored blouse as she forced herself to meet Mark’s burning gaze.
"You think Daniel is gone," Elena said quietly, her voice barely carrying across the disturbed dust motes dancing in the air. "You think that just because his name isn't on the mortgage anymore, he vanished from our lives completely."
Mark slammed his palm against the exposed wooden stud beside the safe, the impact rattling the metal door inside the wall.
"Daniel hasn't lived in this house for five years, Elena!" Mark roared, stepping backward out of the alcove while keeping his eyes locked on the hidden compartment. "He walked out that front door and left us with debts, creditors, and a shattered family. Why is his safe still built into the structural foundation of our home?"
Elena lowered her gaze, a deep sorrow washing over her features that immediately tempered Mark’s blinding rage.
"He didn't just build it, Mark," Elena whispered, taking a cautious step forward. "He locked something away the night before he disappeared. Something he claimed would protect us if things ever went terribly wrong."
Lily looked up at Mark, her innocent face scrunched in confusion. "Is Uncle Daniel coming back to play with me?"
Mark’s expression softened momentarily as he looked down at the child, but the warmth vanished just as quickly as it had appeared.
"No, sweetheart," Mark said gently, kneeling beside her. "Uncle Daniel isn't coming back. But whatever is inside this wall might explain why he ran away in the first place."
Mark stood back up, approaching the safe with renewed caution, running his calloused fingers along the cold steel perimeter.
There was no physical keyhole visible, only a biometric scanner that had been painted over to blend seamlessly with the metal door casing.
Mark pressed his thumb experimentally against the smooth glass plate of the scanner, half-expecting it to light up or buzz.
Instead, nothing happened; the system remained completely dead, starved of the electricity it needed to function.
"It's hardwired into the home’s main electrical grid," Elena realized aloud, her eyes widening as she connected the pieces of the puzzle. "That’s why Daniel spent three days working in the basement right before he left. He was installing a secondary breaker panel."
Mark looked over his shoulder at her, the gears turning in his head as the logistical reality set in.
"If it's wired to the basement breaker," Mark muttered, "then cutting the power to the house won't help us disable the security protocols."
He reached out, tracing the thick black wire that snaked upward from the top of the safe and disappeared into the ceiling joists above.
"We need to find the master override key," Mark said firmly, turning to face Elena with an unwavering demand in his eyes. "And I know you know where Daniel kept it."
May you like
Elena opened her mouth to deny it, but the sudden sound of a car door slamming shut outside in the driveway froze the words in her throat.
