Chapter 3 - Footsteps on the Gravel

The distinct crunch of heavy boots on the gravel driveway outside shattered the fragile stillness of the bedroom.

Mark froze, his hand still hovering inches from the thick black wire leading away from the hidden wall safe.

Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as she rushed to the window, peering cautiously through the cracked blinds down toward the front yard.

A sleek, unmarked black sedan sat idling near the edge of the property, its exhaust puffing white clouds into the chilly autumn air.

"Who is that?" Mark demanded, crossing the room in three long strides to join her at the glass.

"Get away from the window," Elena hissed, grabbing Mark’s arm and pulling him backward into the protective shadow of the wardrobe. "They aren't supposed to be here for another three days. We misjudged the timeline."

Lily whimpered, sensing the sudden shift in the room's emotional gravity, and buried her face in Elena’s dark pants.

Mark gently pried Elena’s fingers off his arm, his jaw set in a hard, uncompromising line. "Who is 'they', Elena? Start talking right now before I go downstairs and introduce myself."

"It's Daniel's creditors," Elena whispered urgently, her eyes swimming with genuine panic. "Not the bank, Mark. The people he owed real money to. Dangerous men who don't care about foreclosure notices or legal channels."

Downstairs, the heavy oak front door groaned open on its hinges, followed by the heavy, deliberate thud of footsteps entering the foyer.

"They're inside," Mark said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, conspiratorial register as he assessed their tactical disadvantage.

The house was old, built with hollow timber framing that carried sound like an acoustic amplifier from the ground floor straight up to the master bedroom.

A deep, gravelly voice echoed up the stairwell, calling out a name that made Elena’s blood run instantly cold.

"Elena... we know you're upstairs," the voice called, smooth and dripping with casual menace. "And we know what Daniel left behind the drywall."

Mark looked from the ruined wall back to Elena, the betrayal cutting deeper than any physical blow could have managed.

"You didn't just stumble onto this safe today, did you?" Mark accused, his voice thick with suppressed rage. "You knew it was here all along. You were waiting for the right moment to open it."

"I was trying to keep us alive!" Elena whispered fiercely, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "If I opened it alone, they would have killed me. If you opened it, I hoped we had a fighting chance."

The heavy footsteps began ascending the stairs, creaking rhythmically on the old wooden steps one by one.

Mark looked at the gaping hole in the wall, then down at the dead biometric scanner, realizing they were entirely out of time.

He grabbed the heavy wooden wardrobe and desperately tried to shove it back into place to hide the wreckage.

"It's too late to hide it," Elena breathed, grabbing Mark's wrist to stop his futile efforts.

The footsteps stopped right outside the master bedroom door, and a heavy knock rattled the wooden panels.
