Chapter 4 - The Uninvited Guest

The heavy knock on the bedroom door vibrated through the wooden frame, echoing like a gavel in a courtroom.
Mark didn't hesitate; he shoved Elena and Lily behind him, planting his tall frame squarely between the intruders and the exposed wall safe.
The door slowly creaked open, revealing a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal wool overcoat stepping into the room.
He had slicked-back graying hair, sharp piercing eyes, and an unnerving calmness that radiated absolute power and control.
"Mark, isn't it?" the man said smoothly, his voice rich and unhurried as he surveyed the ruined drywall and the displaced wardrobe. "I must admit, I didn't expect domestic renovations to be high on your weekend to-do list."
Mark narrowed his eyes, standing his ground. "Who are you, and what are you doing in my house?"
The man offered a thin, humorless smile, sliding his hands casually into the deep pockets of his tailored overcoat.
"My name is Victor Vance," the man replied, taking another slow step into the bedroom while glancing dismissively at Elena. "And I am simply here to collect what your lovely wife’s former husband legally signed over to my associates before he vanished into thin air."
Elena stepped out from behind Mark, her voice shaking slightly but holding firm against the intimidating stranger.
"Daniel didn't sign anything over to you willingly, Victor, and you know it," Elena challenged, her chin tilted upward defiantly. "It was coercion, pure and simple. Extortion backed by threats against our family."
Victor chuckled softly, a low sound devoid of any real amusement. "Semantics, my dear Elena. A signed contract is a signed contract, regardless of the atmospheric pressure in the room when the ink dried."
Victor shifted his gaze back to Mark, noting the heavy iron fireplace poker resting carelessly on the floorboards nearby.
"I'd advise against playing the hero here, Mark," Victor warned, his tone shifting from polite to chillingly clinical in a heartbeat. "The men waiting downstairs are far less conversational than I am, and they lack my appreciation for domestic tranquility."
Mark didn't back down an inch. "If you want whatever is inside that safe, you're going to have to go through me first."
Victor sighed, shaking his head as if dealing with a particularly stubborn child. "Heroism is vastly overrated, Mr. Miller. Especially when you don't even know the combination."
Mark smirked, gesturing toward the destroyed plaster and the exposed metal box. "We already found it."
Victor’s calm facade slipped for a fraction of a second, his eyes flashing toward the safe before he quickly recovered his composure.
"Finding the box and opening it are two entirely different scientific principles," Victor noted smoothly. "Without Daniel’s cryptographic key, that safe is nothing more than an expensive paperweight."
"Then why are you here?" Mark fired back sharply. "If it can't be opened, why send men to break into my house?"
Victor took a slow step closer, lowering his voice until it was barely above a whisper. "Because Daniel didn't just build a safe, Mark. He built a trap. And you just tripped the first wire."

Before Mark could process the warning, a sharp, electronic alarm began to beep rhythmically from inside the wall cavity.
