Chapter 12 - Surrounded in the Mist

The blinding glare of high-powered spotlights flooded the overgrown cemetery, washing out the darkness with harsh, artificial white light.
Heavy engine roars vibrated through the wet earth as three massive black SUVs boxed in the narrow entrance road behind them.
"Get down!" Victor shouted, dropping instantly behind the uneven granite base of the open grave trench.
Mark reacted on pure instinct, grabbing Elena by the waist and pulling her down into the muddy mud beside Victor just as the first volley of automatic gunfire cracked through the night air.
Pink! Ping! Bullets ricocheted wildly off the nearby headstones, sending showers of sharp granite shards flying through the driving rain.
"Who are they?" Mark yelled over the deafening roar of the gunfire, wiping muddy water from his eyes.
"Not my men," Victor replied grimly, pulling his silenced pistol from his holster and chambering a round without hesitation. "This is the federal strike team. Someone tipped them off the moment we accessed the municipal archive server."
Elena clutched the damp earth, her dark eyes wide with terror as heavy boots crunched rapidly across the gravel pathway surrounding the plot.
"They tracked the data cartridge!" Elena realized aloud, her voice trembling. "They know we have Daniel's archive!"
Victor peeked cautiously over the edge of the granite marker, firing two calculated shots toward the nearest approaching headlight before ducking back down.
"We can't stay here," Victor instructed sharply, looking across at Mark. "If they pin us in this trench, we'll spend the rest of our lives in a black-site prison."
Mark looked at the empty grave, then at the open duffel bag containing the laptop and Daniel’s fresh identity documents.
"What about Daniel?" Mark demanded, frustration boiling over the edge of his fear. "If he's still alive, he set us up to take the fall for all of this!"
"Daniel didn't anticipate you coming after him personally, Mark," Victor retorted, his voice sharp and focused. "He expected Elena to handle this alone. You were the unpredictable variable."
