Chapter 5 - The Digital Countdown

The sharp, high-pitched electronic beeping pierced the heavy air of the bedroom, turning everyone’s blood to ice.
Mark spun around, his eyes locking onto the small digital display that had suddenly flickered to life on the face of the hidden wall safe.
A glowing red countdown timer began blinking furiously against the dark metal surface: 00:14:59.
"What did you do?" Elena gasped, grabbing Victor’s sleeve with frantic energy. "You tripped an emergency protocol!"
Victor didn't look panicked; instead, a slow, grim realization spread across his refined features as he stared at the glowing numbers.
"I didn't touch a damn thing," Victor corrected coldly, brushing Elena’s hand off his coat with deliberate care. "Daniel set this up as a dead-man’s switch. When the structural integrity of the wall casing was breached, the system automatically initiated a secure data purge."
Mark lunged forward, pressing his fingers against the glowing keypad, desperately hoping to guess a manual override code.
"Stop wasting your time," Victor instructed flatly, crossing his arms over his chest. "A brute-force entry attempt will trigger the internal thermite charge. In less than fifteen minutes, everything inside that safe—every document, every hard drive, every shred of leverage—will be melted down into slag."
Little Lily began to cry softly, burying her face in Elena’s waist as the rhythmic beeping grew louder and more insistent.
Mark turned around, grabbing Victor by the lapels of his expensive wool coat and slamming him back against the bedroom wall.
"Give me the override code, Victor!" Mark yelled, his face inches from the older man’s calm, unblinking eyes. "You know how this system works! You've been tracking it for five years!"
Victor didn't flinch, staring calmly down at Mark’s white-knuckled grip on his clothing.
"I want what's inside that box just as badly as you do, Mark," Victor wheezed, his voice straining slightly under the pressure. "Perhaps more. But Daniel didn't share his encryption keys with his business partners any more than he shared them with his wife."
Elena stepped in, prying Mark’s fingers loose from Victor’s coat with surprising strength.
"Fighting each other isn't going to stop the clock," Elena said, her voice cutting through the rising panic like a whip. "We need to look at the wire. The one Daniel ran into the ceiling."
Mark blinked, the adrenaline fog clearing slightly as her words registered in his mind.
He looked up at the water-stained acoustic tiles of the ceiling where the thick black cable disappeared into the dark overhead crawlspace.
"If the system is purging data," Mark realized aloud, "it has to be transmitting it somewhere else simultaneously. A remote server."
Victor adjusted his lapels, smoothing his coat with a practiced hand before offering a cold, calculating nod.
"Precisely," Victor agreed, his tone turning sharply professional. "Daniel wasn't just hiding secrets from me; he was building an insurance policy against half the criminal underground in the tri-state area. And if that data uploads to a public cloud storage node..."
Victor didn't need to finish the sentence; the implications hung heavily in the air like a looming storm.
"Half the people you owe money to will go down," Mark finished for him, a grim, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth.
"Not just my associates," Victor corrected quietly, his eyes darkening. "Federal prosecutors, international syndicates, and powerful men who prefer to keep their pasts buried."
Mark looked at the ticking red numbers: 00:11:20.
"There's a junction box in the attic," Mark said, turning toward the hallway door. "That's where the cable terminates."
Mark grabbed the heavy iron fireplace poker off the floor once more, turning to face the open doorway.

"Let's go hunting," Mark said, stepping out of the bedroom and heading straight up the final flight of stairs toward the dark, forgotten attic.
