Chapter 8 - The Bronze Urn

The heavy bronze urn spun wildly through the air, catching the second mercenary squarely across the side of his tactical helmet with a deafening metallic clang. The operative stumbled sideways, releasing Maria’s wrist as he tripped over a jagged shard of glass embedded in the marble floor. Maria fell hard against the white arched wall, clutching her bruised arm while keeping little Maya safely tucked against her chest. The baby's cries echoed off the high ceilings, a piercing reminder of the innocent lives caught in the crossfire of this brutal family war.
The primary mercenary spun around, his silenced submachine gun pivoting instantly from Julian’s chest to aim squarely at Elena’s heart.
"You stupid bitch!" the operative snarled, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Julian moved with blinding, explosive speed. He didn't hesitate, didn't calculate the risk to his own life. He lunged forward across the slick marble, driving his shoulder hard into the mercenary’s midsection just as the weapon discharged. A suppressed thip echoed through the hall, and a fresh round punched a jagged hole through the white plaster wall an inch above Elena’s head.
The two men crashed heavily to the floor, sliding across the scattered glass. Julian rained a flurry of brutal, calculated blows down upon the mercenary’s masked face, his fists striking bone with dull, sickening thuds. The tactical operative tried to bring the butt of his submachine gun up to strike Julian’s temple, but Julian caught the barrel in his bare hand, twisting it sideways with a vicious wrench that snapped the metal mount.
The second mercenary, having recovered his footing from the bronze urn strike, scrambled toward Julian with a tactical combat knife drawn from his thigh rig.
"Julian! Look out!" Elena screamed, lunging forward despite her lack of footwear, grabbing a heavy brass candelabra from the floor.
Before the knife-wielding operative could plunge the blade into Julian’s back, Elena swung the candelabra with both hands, catching the man flush across the jawline. The heavy metal impact dropped him instantly, his eyes rolling back as he collapsed unconscious onto the glass-strewn floor, bleeding profusely from a split lip.
Julian pinned the remaining operative beneath his knee, pressing his forearm against the man's throat until his struggles grew weak and his eyes fluttered shut. Panting heavily, Julian stood up slowly, straightening his black shirt and adjusting his rumpled blazer. He had a shallow cut across his knuckles, dark blood welling against his skin, but his focus remained razor-sharp.
He looked over at Maria, who was trembling violently but nodding to confirm Maya was unharmed. Then, Julian turned his cold, calculating gaze toward Elena, who stood barefoot among the broken glass, holding the dented brass candelabra with shaking hands.
"You didn't hesitate," Julian said, his voice dangerously soft in the quiet aftermath of violence. "You moved like someone who has been through a firefight before."
May you like
Elena dropped the candelabra, the heavy metal clattering loudly against the marble. "I told you, Julian... you don't know the first thing about who I really am."
