Chapter 11 - The Countdown on the Wall

The glowing blue light of the smart home wall tablet cast eerie, shifting shadows across the ornate white arched ceiling of the second-floor landing. Julian and Elena froze in their tracks, their boots halting against the plush runner rug as they stared up at the high-definition display. The live feed from the cliffside lighthouse showed a scene straight out of a nightmare.

Clara stood directly in the center of the damp, concrete-walled chamber. She wore an expensive black wool trench coat that contrasted sharply with the rustic decay of the old maritime facility. Her dark hair was styled identically to Elena’s, creating a chilling, distorted mirror image that made the breath catch in Elena’s throat. Maria was still bound tightly to the steel pillar, her eyes squeezed shut as she desperately tried to shield little Maya’s carrier with her own body. Clara looked directly into the fisheye security lens, a slow, predatory smile spreading across her painted lips.

"I know you're watching, sister dear," Clara's voice broadcasted through the wall panel’s high-fidelity audio speakers, echoing clearly down the grand hallway. "And you, Julian. I hope you brought your checkbook, because the offshore transfer was just the down payment."

Julian took a menacing step toward the tablet, his fingers curling into tight fists at his sides. "Clara! Let the child and the maid go. This is between you and your sister. Name your price—take every cent I own, but don't touch my daughter."

Clara laughed, a sharp, crystalline sound that held no warmth whatsoever. "Your money is already decentralizing into twelve different anonymous crypto-wallets across the Cayman Islands, Julian. There's nothing left to bargain with. What I want now is something far more valuable than your dirty corporate wealth."

She reached down, tapping the heavy industrial detonator box resting on a wooden crate beside her. The digital LED screen mounted on the device flashed a bright, angry red: 24:15... 24:14...

"I want Elena to walk out here alone," Clara continued, her eyes fixed unblinkingly on the camera lens. "No security detail, no weapons, no Julian. Just you and me, sister, standing on the edge of the cliff where we used to play as children. If you aren't standing at the lighthouse door by the time this timer hits zero, I'll trigger the structural charge wired into the foundation. The entire cliffside will slide into the ocean, taking your precious baby down into the dark water with it."

The feed abruptly cut to static, leaving the tablet displaying a generic error code.

Elena stared at the blank screen, her face utterly devoid of color. She didn't hesitate, didn't look back at Julian, and didn't utter a single word of complaint. She simply turned around and began walking toward the grand staircase leading down to the shattered exit.

Julian lunged forward, catching her by the arm and spinning her back around to face him. His eyes were wild with desperation. "Are you out of your mind? You're walking straight into an execution."

Elena looked up at him, her dark eyes fierce and calm all at once. "If I don't go, Maya dies. And if I do go, I buy you enough time to cycle through the maintenance tunnel and disarm the structural charges from underneath. It's the only tactical advantage we have left, Julian."

May you like

Julian gripped her shoulders tighter, his jaw working furiously as he weighed the impossible odds. Before he could speak, a sudden, muffled explosion echoed from the cliffs outside, shaking the very foundations of the luxury mansion.
