Chapter 3 - The Empty Guest Suite

The heavy mahogany door of the guest suite stood slightly ajar, a sliver of warm yellow light cutting across the cold marble flooring of the hallway. Julian strode toward it with heavy, deliberate steps, his black blazer swaying slightly, the embodiment of a protective father and a betrayed husband walking toward a trap. Elena scrambled up from the floor, smoothing her stained silk slip dress with shaking hands, and hurried after him, her bare feet padding silently against the stone. Maria stayed behind in the corridor, cradling the one-year-old baby girl in the pink onesie against her gray uniform shoulder, whispering soothing lullabies to calm the child's residual distress.

"Clara!" Julian called out, his voice a low, threatening rumble as he pushed the door wide open with the flat of his palm.

The room was impeccably neat, entirely devoid of life. A king-sized bed made with crisp white linens sat untouched. The walk-in wardrobe doors were slid open, revealing an empty row of wooden hangers where expensive designer dresses had hung just hours earlier. On the mahogany vanity table, a single silver hairbrush rested beside an open bottle of high-end perfume, the scent lingering heavily in the air like a taunting signature. There was no sign of Clara, no suitcase, no traveling coat, and no physical evidence that she had ever occupied the space—except for one glaring detail.

Elena stepped past Julian, her eyes scanning the room with a growing sense of horror. "She’s gone. She actually used the private service elevator."

Julian walked over to the vanity, his gaze dropping to the marble surface. Resting directly beneath the vanity mirror was a brand-new, unboxed flash drive, blinking with a steady, hypnotic blue LED light. Beside it lay a handwritten note scrawled on customized hotel stationery. Julian reached down, his large fingers picking up the card. He scanned the neat, familiar handwriting, his jaw tightening until the muscles in his face stood out in rigid relief.

"What does it say?" Elena asked, her voice cracking as she stepped closer, reaching out a trembling hand to touch his black shirt sleeve.

Julian didn't look at her. Instead, he turned the card around so she could read the single line written in ink.

“The security footage was just a preview, Julian. Check your private offshore bank vault before the midnight transfer completes.”

Elena froze, the color draining entirely from her face as she realized Clara didn't just want to ruin her marriage—she wanted to bankrupt them completely.
