Chapter 5 - The Encrypted Call

The phone on the desk vibrated with a low, ominous hum against the polished wood, the screen illuminating the dim, book-lined study with a harsh blue glow. Julian stared down at the screen, his fingers twitching instinctively toward the device before pulling back as if it were a coiled viper. Elena stood frozen by the bookshelf, her chest rising and falling rapidly beneath the ruined gold silk dress. The accusation still hung heavily in the air between them, yet the sudden intrusion commanded absolute, terrifying priority.

"Answer it," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the HVAC system. "Put it on speaker."

Julian didn't hesitate. He snatched the phone off the desk, swiped the green accept icon, and slammed it down onto the wooden surface, pressing the speakerphone toggle with a stiff thumb.

"You're a difficult man to reach directly, Julian," a smooth, modulated voice purred through the tiny speaker. It was heavily distorted by a digital filter, masking whether the speaker was male or female, young or old. "I expected you to check your offshore balances much sooner. The Swiss accounts are looking remarkably healthy this evening."

Julian leaned forward, planting both palms flat on the desk, bringing his face inches from the phone. "Who is this? Give me one reason why I shouldn't trace this proxy signal right now and have my security detail intercept you before you reach the tarmac."

A soft, mocking chuckle echoed from the speaker. "Trace away, Mr. Vance. By the time your elite guards break down the door of this abandoned shipping container at the municipal docks, my shell company will have liquidated the remaining assets into decentralized cryptocurrency. Your family's entire generational wealth is gone."

Elena rushed forward, dropping to her knees beside the desk, her fingers hovering near the phone. "Clara! I know it’s you! Drop the voice modifier! Why are you doing this to us? What did we ever do to deserve—"

The digital voice cut her off mid-sentence, hardening instantly into a razor-sharp edge. "Save the dramatic waterworks for your next reality television appearance, Elena. You always were the favorite daughter, the one who inherited the family estate while I was left to rot in the foster system. This isn't just about money. It’s about balance."

Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits. He glanced down at Elena, noting the genuine anguish etched into her features—anguish that looked far too raw to be the performance of a criminal mastermind.

"If this is about a family grudge, settle it with me," Julian growled into the phone. "Leave my wife and my daughter out of it."

"Your wife?" The voice laughed again, a harsh, grating sound. "Oh, Julian. You still believe she’s your wife, don't you? Ask Elena what happened to her real identity before she moved to New York ten years ago. Ask her who she was running from when she legally changed her name."

The call instantly disconnected with a sharp click, leaving behind an absolute, crushing silence in the study.
