Chapter 7 - The Downstairs Ambush

The sound of shattering glass tore through the silence of the estate like a physical blow. Julian didn't hesitate; the protective instinct that had driven him to tackle Elena earlier in the evening flared into raging action. He vaulted over the corner of the heavy oak desk, sprinted out of the study, and took the grand marble staircase three steps at a time, his black blazer billowing behind him. Elena scrambled to her feet, hitching up her stained silk slip dress, and chased desperately after him down the curving corridor.

As they reached the bottom landing, the bright luxury of the entryway looked like a war zone.

The massive glass double doors leading to the front courtyard had been shattered inward, leaving jagged shards sparkling like diamonds across the marble floor. Maria was pressed flat against the white arched wall near the smart home control panel, her gray uniform torn at the shoulder, holding little Maya tightly against her chest. The baby was crying hysterically now, her tiny pink onesie soaked with spilled formula from a knocked-over bottle rolling across the tiles.

Standing in the center of the shattered glass were two heavy-set men in tactical black gear, their faces obscured by matte-black balaclavas. One of them held a customized electronic dampener box that was emitting a high-pitched whine, instantly severing every wireless connection, security feed, and cellular relay inside the mansion.

"Hands on your head! Right now!" the larger operative barked, stepping forward with a heavy combat boot crushing a piece of stained glass. He pointed a silenced submachine gun directly at Julian’s chest.

Julian stopped at the bottom of the stair landing, his hands raised slowly to shoulder height. His jaw was clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. He didn't look afraid; he looked like a trapped predator calculating the exact moment to strike.

"You're trespassing on private federal jurisdiction," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly steady. "Whatever Clara promised to pay you, double it and walk out that door right now, or you won't survive the hour."

The second operative chuckled darkly, stepping past the shattered entryway toward Maria and the crying baby. "Mrs. Clara Vance sends her regards, Mr. Vance. But she didn't hire us for corporate espionage. She hired us to clean house."

Maria screamed, desperately trying to shield Maya with her own body as the mercenary reached out a gloved hand to snatch the baby from her arms.

Elena reached the bottom of the stairs just in time to witness the brute grab Maria by the wrist, twisting her arm until the maid cried out in pain. Without thinking, without calculating the sheer danger of the situation, Elena grabbed a heavy, bronze decorative urn off the entryway console and hurled it with all her might directly at the mercenary's head.
