Chapter 4 - The Offshore Terminal

The private study on the home's second floor smelled of old leather, polished mahogany, and high-end scotch. Heavy velvet drapes blocked out the midnight fog rolling in from the coast, casting long, bruised shadows across the Persian rug. Julian sat heavily in his ergonomic leather chair, his dark hair ruffled from running his hands through it in frustration. His fingers danced across the mechanical keyboard of his custom-built workstation, bypassing three layers of biometric security to access his primary corporate and personal offshore accounts.

Elena stood behind him, her hands tightly clasped in front of the gold silk slip dress, which still bore the crusty, yellow stain of the baby food disaster. Her dark hair fell loosely over one shoulder as she leaned in, watching the glowing dual-monitor setup display endless rows of algorithmic encryption keys and transaction ledgers.

"Is the transfer still active?" Elena whispered, the tension in the room thick enough to choke on.

"No," Julian replied, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "It was already executed forty-eight hours ago. Exactly twelve hours before Clara arrived at the front gates."

Elena stumbled back a step, colliding gently with a mahogany bookshelf. "That’s impossible. Only you and I have the cryptographic keys to authorize a liquidity shift of that magnitude. Are you saying..."

"I’m saying someone cloned my biometric thumbprint using the high-definition smart home sensors," Julian interrupted, standing up so abruptly that his chair rolled back and slammed into the wood-paneled wall. He turned to face her, his eyes dark, burning with a dangerous mixture of grief and strategic calculation. "And the only person with unrestricted access to my private study, my biometric safe, and my personal schedule over the past month has been you, Elena."

Elena let out a sharp gasp, her hands flying to her mouth. "You still think I did this? After everything we just discovered about Clara?"

"Clara doesn't know the master pin code to my corporate trust, Elena. She hasn't lived under this roof in ten years," Julian said coldly, stepping around the desk to tower over her. "Only one person knew the vault had been compromised before Maria brought us to that hallway tablet. You didn't panic because you were innocent. You panicked because you realized your sister botched the getaway timing."

Before Elena could muster the breath to defend herself, a sharp, piercing chime rang out from the smart home wall panel mounted right outside the study door. Both of them froze, their eyes darting toward the hallway.

Julian’s private mobile phone, resting face-up on the mahogany desk, suddenly lit up with an incoming video call from an unrecognized, international encrypted number.
