Chapter 1 - The Gold Silk and the Granite Stare

The cold impact of Julian’s fingers digging into Elena’s throat against the pristine white marble wall sent a sharp wave of panic through her chest. The gold silk slip dress, already ruined by a yellowish smear of mashed organic peas, twisted uncomfortably around her ribs as she gasped for air. Her long dark hair tangled against the cool plaster. Across the hallway, the smart home wall tablet glowed with the stark, indisputable playback of the security footage. It showed Elena standing alone in the bright corridor just moments before, aggressively shoving a petite stranger in a matching outfit toward the floor, sending the crawling baby tumbling into the path of danger.

Julian’s face was a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. His black blazer was slightly rumpled, and the dark shirt beneath pulled tight across his chest as he pinned her higher against the wall.

"You threw my daughter!" Julian roared, his voice echoing off the high arched ceilings like a gunshot.

Elena clawed weakly at his forearm, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and absolute confusion.

"Julian, stop! Look at me! That wasn't me on that screen!" Elena choked out, her breath hitching as his grip tightened fractionally.

"I saw it with my own eyes, Elena," Julian whispered, his tone dropping into a terrifyingly calm register that chilled her blood more than his shouting. "The camera doesn't lie."

Beneath them, on the floor, little Maya let out a soft, confused whimper in her pink onesie. Elena lowered her gaze, watching as Julian instinctively stepped back to shield the child, his towering frame positioning itself between the baby and the woman he had loved for five years. Maria, the forty-year-old Hispanic maid in her gray uniform with the crisp white collar, knelt trembling on the marble tiles. Maria's hands remained clasped tightly together, her knuckles white, as she stared up at Julian with wide, tear-filled eyes.

"Sir, please, you have to look at the system logs," Maria pleaded, her voice trembling so violently she could barely articulate the words. "The file metadata... it was modified three minutes ago."

Julian stopped dead, his hand still hovering threateningly inches from Elena's face, as a chilling realization flickered in his dark eyes.
