Chapter 13 - The Trap Sprung

The cold coastal wind whipped violently around the base of the stone lighthouse, carrying the heavy scent of salt water and damp earth. Elena stood frozen on the gravel path, her hands raised slightly, keeping her dark eyes locked onto Clara’s manic, triumphant expression. Ten yards behind Clara, half-hidden in the deep shadows beneath the exterior metal staircase, the rusted grate of the cliffside utility shaft gave a microscopic, metallic clink.

Julian was in position.

"You've lost, Clara," Elena called out, her voice remarkably steady despite the freezing wind chilling her bare skin through the torn gold silk slip dress. "The federal authorities traced your offshore shell accounts the moment you initiated the final transfer sequence. You have no safehouse to run to. The estate is surrounded."

Clara’s mocking smile faltered for a fraction of a second, her eyes darting nervously toward the dark tree line behind Elena before she caught herself and let out a harsh, bitter laugh.

"You always were a terrible liar, sister," Clara sneered, tightening her grip on the heavy steel pipe in her right hand. "There are no federal agents out here. There’s just the two of us, the crashing waves, and forty-five seconds left on this detonator before I send this entire cliffside—and your precious niece—straight into the abyss."

Inside the damp ground-level chamber behind Clara, Maria could be muffled screaming through the thick timber door, her voice distorted by panic as she tried to soothe the frantic crying of little Maya in the carrier.

Clara raised the industrial detonator, her thumb hovering directly over the primary activation switch. "Say goodbye, Elena."

At that exact microsecond, the rusted metal grate beneath the staircase blew outward with a deafening crash. Julian exploded from the utility shaft like a coiled spring, moving with blinding, brutal speed. Before Clara could pivot or depress the switch, Julian slammed his body into her side, tackling her hard onto the gravel courtyard.

The heavy steel pipe flew from Clara’s hand, clattering away into the darkness, while the digital detonator slipped from her fingers and bounced harmlessly onto a patch of soft moss.

Clara shrieked in rage, clawing viciously at Julian’s face with manicured fingernails, drawing a thin line of bright red blood across his cheek. But Julian didn't flinch. He pinned her arms securely to the ground with his knees, pressing his forearm across her collarbone until she choked on her breath, immobilized beneath his overwhelming weight.

Elena didn't waste a second. She sprinted past them, wrenching open the heavy iron door of the lighthouse and diving into the dim, damp interior to reach Maria and the baby.
