Chapter 14 - The Final Rescue

The interior of the lighthouse chamber smelled heavily of mold, damp concrete, and rusted iron. A single halogen work light dangling from a frayed cord overhead cast harsh, flickering shadows across the damp stone walls. Elena rushed to the center of the room where Maria was tied securely to the massive steel support pillar with heavy-duty industrial zip ties. Maria was sobbing openly, her gray uniform soaked with sweat and tears, her arms wrapped tightly around the padded portable carrier resting at her feet.
Inside the carrier, one-year-old Maya was hiccupping softly in her pink onesie, her tiny face flushed from crying.
"I've got you, Maria. Hold still," Elena panted, her fingers frantically searching the floor until she spotted a sharp shard of broken glass left behind by the mercenaries. Grasping the jagged edge carefully, she sawed through the heavy plastic zip ties binding Maria’s wrists with desperate, lightning-fast strokes.
With a sharp snap, the final restraint gave way. Maria instantly tumbled forward, collapsing onto the concrete floor, but her grip on the baby carrier never falter. She clutched the infant to her chest, looking up at Elena with wide, tear-filled eyes.
"Go, Mrs. Vance! Get the baby out of here! The structural timer is still counting down!" Maria gasped, pointing toward a small digital display mounted on the wall near the back of the chamber.
Elena looked up. The red LED numbers were flashing frantically: 00:08... 00:07... 00:06...
Clara had lied about disabling the fallback sequence. The manual secondary charge wired into the foundation was set to detonate regardless of the detonator switch outside.
Elena snatched the baby carrier from Maria’s arms, holding little Maya tight against her chest, and bolted for the heavy iron doorway. Just as she crossed the threshold into the night air, Julian came stumbling backward out of the shadows, dragging a fighting, screaming Clara by the collar of her black wool trench coat.
"Get away from the door! Now!" Julian roared over the howling wind, shoving Clara hard toward the gravel path as he grabbed Elena and the baby with his free arm, throwing all three of them flat onto the soft grass behind a low stone retaining wall.

A fraction of a second later, a blinding flash of white light erupted from the base of the lighthouse, followed immediately by a concussive roar that rattled the teeth in their skulls. The ancient stone structure groaned, tilted heavily toward the cliff edge, and then collapsed entirely into a chaotic avalanche of rubble and dust, sliding violently down into the dark, churning ocean waves below.
