Chapter 8 - The Weight of the Badge

The heavy silence in the formal dining room became absolute. The federal agent’s words hung in the air like a physical blow, stripping away every vestige of the illusion Julian had meticulously constructed around his aristocratic lifestyle. The silver cutlery, the glittering crystal chandelier, the expensive tailoring—all of it suddenly looked like a fragile stage set about to collapse.

Julian froze, his hand still suspended in mid-air where he had reached out to Amy. Color drained entirely from his face, leaving a sickly, ash-gray pallor that made him look a decade older.

"There’s been a mistake," Julian stammered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched plea as he looked frantically around the table for an ally. "Pendelton! Tell them! This is a corporate dispute, a civil matter—not a federal crime!"

Arthur Pendelton did not look up from the financial audit spread across the linen tablecloth. He slowly closed the manila folder, placed his pen carefully beside it, and adjusted his glasses.

"The moment corporate reserve funds were diverted to settle private gambling liabilities through offshore accounts, Julian, it ceased being a civil matter," Pendelton said coldly, his voice devoid of any previous warmth. "The board will be cooperating fully with the federal investigators."

Beatrice slammed both palms down onto the mahogany table, the force of her blow rattling the water glasses. Her eyes flashed with absolute fury as she glared at the federal agents, refusing to yield even as her empire crumbled around her.

"This is an outrage!" Beatrice shouted, her voice shaking with restrained rage. "You cannot arrest my son in his own home based on the fabricated vendetta of an unqualified interloper!"

"Ma'am, I suggest you step back," the second federal agent warned quietly, his hand resting casually near his belt as he stepped further into the room. He turned his attention back to Julian, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical pouch. "Julian Vance, turn around and place your hands behind your back."

Julian took a desperate step backward, his eyes darting toward the French doors leading out to the dark, stormy garden, calculating the slim chance of escape. But Marcus anticipated the move, casually stepping into the path of the doors and blocking any route to the terrace with a calm, mocking smile.

"Don't even think about it, cousin," Marcus murmured. "The mud outside is quite dreadful for Italian leather shoes."

Realizing he was completely cornered, Julian let out a ragged breath. The arrogant facade shattered entirely, leaving behind a pathetic, trembling man. He slowly turned around, extending his wrists as the cold steel cuffs snapped shut with a definitive, chilling click.

As the agents led a subdued Julian toward the foyer, his eyes locked onto Amy one last time, filled with a mixture of hatred and profound disbelief.

"You'll ruin everything," Julian whispered harshly as he passed her. "You have no idea what you've unleashed."

Amy watched him go without flinching, feeling the steady, rhythmic heartbeat of little Clara against her chest. But as the front door closed behind the federal agents, a sharp knock echoed from the back service entrance near the kitchen, followed by a muffled voice shouting an urgent warning.
