Chapter 12 - The Override Code

The sharp, electronic chime of the kitchen security panel pierced the quiet aftermath of Beatrice’s departure like a sudden alarm. Amy stopped in her tracks, her hand hovering instinctively over the warm, soft head of little Clara resting securely in the beige carrier. Marcus, who had been pouring himself a fresh glass of scotch at the mahogany sideboard, froze instantly, his amber eyes darting toward the narrow service hallway.
"That panel hasn't been keyed to an external override in over five years," Marcus muttered, his casual demeanor instantly vanishing as he set his glass down with a sharp clink. "Only two people possessed the master cryptographic keys: Beatrice and Julian."
"Julian is sitting in the back of a federal cruiser on his way downtown," Amy noted calmly, though her muscles tensed beneath her worn trousers. She adjusted her posture, her analytical mind—honed by years of rigorous forensic training—instantly calculating the vulnerabilities of the sprawling estate.
Thomas Vance stood up heavily from his armchair, leaning on the edge of the table for support. "It's the contingency protocol," the older man whispered, his face draining of what little color remained. "Beatrice had a secondary holding shelter built beneath the wine cellar three decades ago. It operates on an independent power grid, completely divorced from the main house systems. If she was taken away, she programmed the vault to automatically purge all physical hard drives connecting Vance Global to the Swiss syndicate."
"A scorched-earth policy," Marcus said, swearing softly under his breath. "If those drives burn, the federal prosecutors lose the physical paper trail, and Beatrice walks on a technicality during the extradition hearings next month."
Amy didn't hesitate. Without waiting for either man to advise her, she turned on her heel and strode purposefully toward the swinging kitchen doors. The suffocating formality of the dining room vanished, replaced by the cool, sterile environment of the stainless-steel prep kitchen.
"Where are you going, Amy?" Thomas called out, hobbling a few steps behind her. "That cellar is private property under federal seal now—you can't just—"
"I am the majority shareholder and legal administrator of this estate, Thomas," Amy interrupted over her shoulder, her voice ringing with absolute, unyielding resolve. "And I am not letting her burn my family's legacy twice."
She pushed through the swinging doors into the dark pantry, navigating the labyrinth of commercial shelving by memory alone until she reached the concealed panel behind the walk-in refrigeration unit. The keypad glowed with a faint, pulsing red light as a numerical countdown blinked rapidly on the tiny LED screen: 00:03:45 remaining until thermal purge.
Marcus arrived a fraction of a second later, flashlight in hand, casting a harsh beam across the heavy steel reinforcement of the hidden floor hatch. The digital keypad was locked behind a biometric scanner that required a direct genetic match from the primary bloodline of Arthur Vance.
"It's a genetic lock," Marcus said, pressing his own thumb against the scanner out of frustration. The screen flashed a harsh, angry crimson: ACCESS DENIED. "It won't open for us. We need Julian or Beatrice."

Amy stepped forward, brushing past Marcus without a word. She looked down at the tiny, sleeping infant resting peacefully against her chest, then reached out and pressed little Clara’s tiny, unblemished thumb directly against the glowing optical scanner.
