Chapter 7 - The Midnight Freeze

The manila folder landed heavily on the white porcelain plate, scattering a few crumbs of uneaten artisan bread across the spotless linen tablecloth. Arthur Pendelton’s hand hovered over the clasp for a fraction of a second before he pulled it toward himself with practiced caution. He untied the red string, slid the contents onto the table, and began scanning the dense financial summaries with eyes that widened noticeably with every passing line.

"Good God," Pendelton murmured, his voice barely audible above the howling wind outside the French doors. He looked up, his gaze fixing on Beatrice with sudden, palpable hostility. "These are federal wire transfer receipts routed through offshore shell accounts in the Caymans. This isn't just financial mismanagement, Beatrice. This is systematic asset stripping."

Beatrice didn't blink. She straightened her posture, lifting her chin with an aristocratic haughtiness that had intimidated boardroom executives for over forty years.

"A desperate fabrication by a bitter, uneducated girl who wandered in from the streets," Beatrice declared, her voice ringing with absolute, practiced conviction as she swept her gaze across the uneasy executives. "Are you really going to let a twenty-five-year-old nursemaid with zero corporate experience dismantle a legacy built over half a century on the word of a disgruntled relative?"

"She is not an uneducated girl, Aunt Beatrice," Marcus noted dryly, stepping closer to the table and leaning casually against the back of an empty chair. "Amy graduated top of her class in forensic accounting from NYU before Julian isolated her in this mausoleum and convinced her she was incapable of balancing a checkbook."

Julian stared at his wife as if seeing her for the very first time. The dark, manicured woman he had manipulated and belittled for years—the quiet girl he thought he had successfully broken into domestic submission—vanished, replaced by the terrifying realization that his entire livelihood had just been dismantled by a single signature.

"Amy," Julian began, his voice dropping into a desperate, pleading register as he took a tentative step toward her. He forced a strained, conciliatory smile onto his face, holding out a trembling hand. "Please. Let’s not do this here. Let’s go upstairs, away from these people, and we can talk about our future like a family. For Clara’s sake."

Amy looked down at Julian’s outstretched hand, then up into his desperate, pleading eyes. She felt no anger left—only a profound, hollow exhaustion that made his performative affection feel utterly pathetic.

"Our future was decided the moment you locked me out of this dining room, Julian," Amy said softly, stepping backward out of his reach.

Suddenly, the heavy mahogany double doors at the front entrance of the mansion swung open with a resounding bang, echoing loudly through the cavernous foyer. Heavy, synchronized footsteps marched across the marble floor toward the dining room.

Two men in dark federal suits appeared in the doorway, flashing polished gold badges before looking directly at Arthur Pendelton and Julian.

"Julian Vance?" the lead federal agent called out, his voice sharp and authoritative. "We have a federal warrant for your arrest regarding corporate wire fraud and the embezzlement of Vance Global structural reserves."
