Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Ledger

The sharp clatter of Beatrice’s silver fork hitting the porcelain plate shattered the frozen stillness of the dining room. For three agonizing seconds, no one breathed. Then Arthur Pendelton leaned forward, adjusting his gold-rimmed reading glasses as his eyes scanned the embossed header of the document resting beside the water pitcher.
"This is absurd," Julian sputtered, his voice cracking slightly as he lunged toward the table to snatch the paper away. "This is a pathetic forgery—a sick prank orchestrated by my delinquent cousin to sabotage tonight's merger negotiations!"
Before Julian’s fingers could graze the parchment, Marcus stepped smoothly into the room from the hallway, his posture relaxed, a faint, amused smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
"Not a forgery at all, dear cousin," Marcus interjected smoothly, sliding his hands into the pockets of his tailored trousers. "I had the privilege of reviewing the registry with the probate court downtown just this morning. Arthur Vance left his entire voting block—fifty-one percent of Vance Global—to his legal granddaughter. Which happens to be the very same woman you just ordered out of your house like a common trespasser."
A murmur rippled through the seated executives. Faces turned from Julian to Amy in a sudden, collective shift of political gravity. Wealth and power in this room worshipped only one true deity: control of the ledger.
Beatrice rose slowly from her seat at the head of the table, her dark blue dress rustling with an icy dignity. Her face was pale, but her eyes burned with decades of ruthless ambition.
"Sit down, Arthur Pendelton," Beatrice commanded, her voice dropping an octave as she glared at the senior managing director, who had half-risen from his chair. "This girl knows nothing about running a conglomerate. She spent the last three years scrubbing floors and changing diapers while we kept this failing enterprise afloat through sheer strategic brilliance."
Amy turned her gaze slowly toward her mother-in-law. The memory of every cruel remark, every calculated humiliation, and every forced hour of subservience flashed behind her eyes, fueling a quiet, devastating fire within her soul.
"You kept the enterprise afloat by embezzling restructuring funds to pay off Julian’s mounting gaming debts," Amy said calmly, stepping closer to the head of the table.
The entire dining room gasped. Julian stumbled backward, colliding sharply with the back of an empty chair, his breath hitching in his throat as he stared at his wife with sheer terror.
"Prove it," Julian choked out, his voice a desperate whisper. "Prove it right now, you ungrateful—"
May you like
"I don't have to prove it to you, Julian," Amy interrupted quietly, reaching into the baby carrier to soothe little Clara, who stirred again at the raised voices. She pulled out a second, thicker manila folder from beneath the carrier's flap and tossed it directly onto the plate in front of Arthur Pendelton. "The federal audit was filed at five o'clock this afternoon. And the freeze on all Vance Global corporate accounts goes into effect at midnight."
