Chapter 4 - Caught in the Crossfire

Julian’s gaze cut through the dim light of the hallway, locking onto Marcus with an expression of pure, unadulterated venom. The champagne glass in Julian’s hand was gripped so tightly that his knuckles had turned completely white, the skin stretched taut over bone. He looked from Marcus to Amy, his chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow breaths as his mind raced to connect the pieces of their whispered conversation.

"What the hell are you doing out here with her, Marcus?" Julian barked, stepping fully into the corridor and planting himself squarely between his cousin and his wife. His voice carried the sharp, authoritative edge of a man accustomed to compliance, though a subtle twitch near his left eye betrayed his mounting panic.

Marcus didn't flinch. Instead, he took another unhurried sip of his scotch, his gaze drifting lazily over Julian’s immaculate dark gray suit before meeting his eyes with a mocking smile.

"Just catching up on family history, cousin," Marcus replied smoothly, his tone dripping with calculated insouciance. "It appears we’ve all been somewhat remiss in our understanding of Vance family dynamics lately. Some people are learning who actually holds the keys to the kingdom, while others are discovering that their gilded cage is built entirely on sand."

Julian’s face flushed a mottled, dangerous red. He lunged forward, grabbing Marcus by the lapel of his tailored blazer with a violent tug that rattled the ice in Marcus's glass.

"Keep your snide remarks to yourself, or I’ll have you thrown out on the street right now," Julian hissed, his voice dropping to a low, menacing growl. "You are only tolerated in this house because my mother insists on maintaining appearances for the board."

"The board?" Marcus laughed, a sharp, barking sound that echoed off the high ceiling. "Ask your precious mother about the board meetings scheduled for Monday morning, Julian. Ask her whose signature is required to release the third-quarter liquidity funds."

Amy stood silently just beyond their reach, watching the two men tear at each other with a detached clarity that frightened her more than their anger. In her arms, little Clara shifted restlessly, letting out a soft coo that seemed to puncture the masculine posturing instantly. Julian froze, his grip on Marcus’s jacket loosening as he remembered the audience standing mere feet away.

Slowly, Julian released his cousin, straightening his lapel with a sharp, compulsive jerk before turning his furious gaze back toward Amy.

"Get upstairs. Now," Julian commanded through clenched teeth, pointing a rigid finger toward the grand staircase at the end of the hall. "I will deal with you and your little performance when I am finished entertaining my guests."

Amy did not move. She looked past Julian’s shoulder into the brightly lit dining room, where several influential business associates and their wives had stopped eating and were now craning their necks to watch the domestic drama unfold in the corridor.
