Chapter 13 - The Genetic Key

The optical scanner hummed softly beneath little Clara’s tiny thumb. For two agonizing seconds, the digital screen continued to pulse a dangerous, warning crimson, the countdown timer ticking down relentlessly: 00:02:10 remaining.
Marcus held his breath, leaning over the panel with his flashlight trembling slightly in his grip. Thomas Vance stood back in the shadows of the pantry, watching with wide, disbelieving eyes as the legacy of Arthur Vance bypassed two generations of corrupt heirs and rested entirely in the hands of the youngest generation.
Suddenly, the red light flickered, shifted, and turned a brilliant, steady emerald green.
A heavy, pneumatic hiss echoed from beneath the reinforced floorboards as the hydraulic locks disengaged with a deep, shuddering thud. The steel hatch lifted slightly on its hinges, releasing a plume of cool, sterile air that smelled faintly of ozone and old paper.
"I'll be damned," Marcus breathed, a mixture of shock and reluctant admiration washing over his face. "The old man programmed the master override for the primary direct bloodline, bypassing all corporate proxies and designated heirs."
"My grandfather knew exactly what he was doing when he drafted the trust," Amy said quietly, her voice steady as she adjusted the carrier straps to ensure Clara remained secure and undisturbed. "He didn't trust Julian, he didn't trust Beatrice, and he certainly didn't trust the board."
Without hesitation, Amy pulled the heavy steel hatch fully open, revealing a steep, winding spiral staircase plunging down into the illuminated depths of the subterranean vault. A soft, rhythmic whirring sound emanated from below, accompanied by the gentle blinking of server racks operating on an independent generator.
"Stay here and secure the perimeter, Marcus," Amy commanded, her tone leaving no room for argument. "If any federal agents or local police arrive, let me handle them."
"You're going down there alone?" Thomas asked, stepping forward with a look of deep concern. "Beatrice may have left a secondary fail-safe or a manual deterrent. That vault was built during the Cold War—it's a fortress."
"That fortress is built on stolen ground," Amy replied, stepping onto the top step of the spiral staircase. "It's time to take it back."
She descended into the subterranean archive, her footsteps echoing softly against the concrete steps. The air grew cooler as she moved deeper underground, the harsh fluorescent lights overhead flickering once before stabilizing. Below her stretched a massive, high-tech server room filled with rows of black metallic towers, their indicator lights blinking in frantic, synchronized patterns.
At the far end of the central console, illuminated by the cold blue glow of a master terminal, sat a heavy mahogany desk—and standing beside it, frantically typing commands into the override keyboard, was Beatrice Vance.

The matriarch had managed to double back through the private service tunnel before the marshals secured the perimeter gates. Her dark blue dress was dusty, her hair slightly unpinned, but her eyes burned with a manic, desperate fury as she heard Amy’s footsteps echoing across the concrete floor.
