Chapter 5 - The Grand Entrance

With a deliberate, unhurried slowness that infuriated Julian more than any scream could have, Amy adjusted the strap of the baby carrier and took a firm step forward, directly past her husband and into the open doorway of the formal dining room. The ambient chatter of the dinner party died away instantly, replaced by a heavy, suffocating silence as thirty pairs of eyes locked onto the exhausted young mother standing on the threshold of their exclusive world.
Beatrice sat at the head of the mahogany table, her fork suspended halfway to her mouth, her face hardening into an expression of glacial fury.
"Julian," Beatrice said, her voice cutting through the room like shattered glass. "Control your wife. This is a private gathering of the executive committee, not a nursery."
Julian rushed into the room behind Amy, his face contorted in embarrassment and rage. He reached out to grab her arm, intending to drag her bodily from the room before she could humiliate him further in front of his most important financial backers.
"Amy, I am warning you for the last time," Julian muttered furiously under his breath, his fingers grazing the fabric of her sleeve.
"Don't touch me, Julian," Amy said, her voice carrying clearly across the expansive room, striking every guest with its absolute, unyielding composure. She turned to face the table, her posture straight, her gaze steady as she looked directly at Arthur Pendelton, the senior managing director of Vance Global.
Mr. Pendelton frowned, lowering his napkin to his lap as he recognized the striking resemblance between the young woman standing before him and his late, brilliant mentor, Arthur Vance.
"Is there something you need, young lady?" Pendelton asked, his tone polite but laced with unmistakable condescension. "If you are here to clear the dessert plates, I believe the kitchen staff is through the swinging door to your left."
"I am not here to clear the plates, Mr. Pendelton," Amy replied, her voice ringing out with an effortless authority that commanded the entire room. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the legal document, and laid it flat upon the polished mahogany centerpieces, right beside the crystal water pitcher. "I am here to call the first extraordinary shareholders' meeting of Vance Global, effective immediately."

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his face draining of all color as he stared at the paper on the table. Across from him, Beatrice dropped her fork with a sharp clatter that echoed violently against the crystal chandelier.
