Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Witness

The door swung inward, casting a warm wedge of golden chandelier light across the Persian rug where Amy stood half-concealed by the shadows of the grandfather clock. Marcus Vance, Julian’s estranged younger cousin and the black sheep of the family, stepped out into the hallway, holding a fresh crystal tumbler of scotch. He stopped dead in his tracks upon seeing Amy, his amber eyes widening slightly in surprise before settling into a knowing, cynical smirk.
"Well, well," Marcus murmured, taking a slow sip of his drink as he leaned casually against the mahogany wainscoting. "It appears the help has not yet learned how to vanish into thin air. Or perhaps Julian’s leash is shorter than I originally calculated."
Amy pulled the collar of her beige top closer around her neck, her chin lifting with a sudden, unfamiliar defiance that made Marcus pause. The fear that had paralyzed her inside the dining room was rapidly crystallizing into something sharp, cold, and entirely unbreakable.
"You were at the reading of my grandfather’s will, weren't you, Marcus?" Amy asked quietly, her voice devoid of its usual tremor.
Marcus lowered his glass, the smirk vanishing from his face as a look of genuine shock flickered through his eyes. He glanced quickly toward the closed dining room door, ensuring the muffled sound of Beatrice’s booming laughter drowned out their conversation, before turning his gaze back to Amy with a newfound intensity.
"So, you finally found it," Marcus said, his tone dropping to a low, conspiratorial whisper. "I wondered how long it would take for the hounds to slip up. Aunt Beatrice has been burning correspondence for months, Amy. She assumes that because you came from nothing, you’ll never figure out how to look at a public registry."
"They took everything from me," Amy said, her fingers tightening around the legal document in her pocket until the paper crinkled sharply. "My inheritance, my dignity, and now they expect me to serve them in my own marital home."
"Your marital home?" Marcus let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "My dear cousin, Julian signed away his personal equity in Vance Global six months ago to cover his gambling debts at the private clubs downtown. The only reason this house still stands in his name is because your grandfather’s trust was still paying the mortgage. A trust that legally transferred to you the moment you turned twenty-five last Tuesday."

Before Amy could process the staggering scale of the deception, the dining room door was yanked open with sudden, aggressive force, flooding the hallway with light and revealing Julian standing in the doorway, his eyes dark with suspicion as he stared directly at his cousin.
