Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Crows

The scratch of Arthur Pendelton’s fountain pen signing the transfer order sounded remarkably loud in the silent dining room. With every stroke of black ink, the foundation upon which Beatrice had built her fifty-year reign of terror crumbled into dust. The senior managing director carefully blotted the signature, closed the folder, and slid it across the mahogany table toward Amy with a gesture of profound, uncharacteristic respect.
"It is done, Ms. Vance," Pendelton said quietly, standing up from his seat and buttoning his suit jacket. "The board recognizes your controlling interest. Vance Global is officially under your administration."
Beatrice stood frozen at the head of the table, her hands gripping the carved mahogany armrests so tightly her fingertips were entirely bloodless. Her chest rose and fell in shallow, jagged motions as she stared at the signed document as if it were a death warrant.
"You don't know what you've done," Beatrice whispered, her voice cracking for the first time with a pathetic, desperate edge. "Without our liquidity network, the holding company will default on its international debts within forty-eight hours. The banks will foreclose on every property from here to Manhattan, including this estate."
Amy looked down at her former mother-in-law, feeling neither triumph nor pity—only a cold, clean detachment.
"Then let it burn, Beatrice," Amy replied evenly, adjusting the strap of the beige carrier as little Clara stirred against her chest. "If this house was built on stolen signatures and the misery of innocent people, it deserves to fall."
Marcus let out a low whistle of appreciation from the doorway, while Thomas Vance nodded approvingly into his scotch glass. The remaining executive guests began quietly gathering their belongings, eager to distance themselves from a sinking ship that was rapidly turning into a federal crime scene. One by one, they filed out of the dining room without a backward glance at the woman who had ruled over them for decades with an iron fist.
As the last guest disappeared down the grand foyer, heavy footsteps echoed from the front entrance once again. Two federal marshals, accompanied by a local magistrate, re-entered the dining room carrying a fresh set of legal warrants.
"Beatrice Vance?" the lead marshal announced formally, holding up a blue-backed document. "You are named as a co-conspirator in the federal indictment regarding wire fraud, corporate forgery, and obstruction of justice."
Beatrice did not flinch. She slowly released her grip on the mahogany chair, standing up to her full height with a last remnant of aristocratic defiance. She smoothed down the front of her dark blue dress, lifted her chin, and walked past the marshals without uttering a single word, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor of the foyer until the heavy front door swung shut behind her.
Amy stood alone in the center of the vast, opulent dining room, surrounded by the remnants of a dinner party that would go down in corporate history as one of the most spectacular downfalls of the decade. The crystal chandelier hummed softly above her, casting its glittering light over the empty plates and half-filled wine glasses.

She turned toward the French doors, where the storm outside had finally begun to clear, revealing a pale sliver of moonlight breaking through the heavy clouds. But as she took her first step toward the exit, a soft beep echoed from the security panel near the kitchen, indicating that the perimeter gates had just been manually overridden from an external terminal.
