Chapter 1 - The Broken Threshold

The crystal chandelier above the long mahogany table cast a glittering, cold reflection across the polished silver. Outside, the autumn wind battered the French doors of the sprawling estate, but inside, the air was suffocatingly still. Amy stood just beyond the threshold of the formal dining room, her legs trembling beneath the heavy weight of the beige fabric carrier strapped tightly against her chest. Inside the small enclosure, a six-month-old infant breathed softly, entirely unaware of the social execution taking place around her.
Julian burst through the doorway, his dark gray double-breasted suit sharp against the dim lighting, a half-empty glass of champagne still clutched in his hand. His dark eyes darted from the seated guests to Amy, narrowing instantly as the champagne sloshed dangerously over the crystal rim.
"What are you doing?" Julian demanded sharply, his voice cutting through the polite murmurs of the dinner party like a knife.
Amy instinctively looked down at the baby in the carrier, her face tightening with a mixture of profound distress and raw humiliation. Her lower lip quivered slightly as she fought back a wave of tears, her breath catching in her throat before she managed to speak.
"She said... I had to serve everyone first," Amy whispered softly, her voice barely audible over the crackle of the fireplace.
Across the room, Beatrice—Julian’s formidable mother—shifted in her dark blue dress. She crossed her arms tightly over her chest, her gray hair pulled into a severe bun that accentuated her sharp, disapproving jawline.
"A woman should earn her place," Beatrice stated coldly, staring directly at Amy as if the young mother were nothing more than an inconvenient piece of antique furniture.
Julian’s face flushed a deep, furious crimson. He took two heavy steps forward, closing the distance between them, and grabbed Amy roughly by the shoulder. His fingers dug into the fabric of her top as he glared down at her with unbridled contempt.
"Get out of my house," Julian said firmly, his voice shaking with suppressed rage.

Amy stumbled backward into the dark hallway, the heavy oak door slamming shut in her face with a deafening finality. She stood alone in the dark, but as she reached down to adjust the strap of the carrier, her fingers brushed against a cold, forgotten envelope tucked into the side pocket—a legal document bearing the seal of her late grandfather’s estate attorney.
