Chapter 6 - Smoke and Mirrors

The heat from the basement quickly rose through the floorboards, turning the elegant upstairs hallway into a suffocating chimney. Thick, acrid smoke curled around the floral wallpaper, staining the delicate pattern in black soot and obscuring the gruesome scratch where Clara’s hair had been found. Officer Miller dropped to one knee, coughing into his elbow before pulling a portable radio from his belt to scream for emergency fire units.
"All units, we have an active arson situation at the residence!" Officer Miller shouted into the comms over the rising roar of flames. "Basement is fully involved! Repeat, the exits are compromised!"
Julian grabbed a heavy wool blanket from the nearby guest room, soaking it under the bathroom sink before wrapping it securely around Leo and Chloe. His mind raced frantically through the layout of the old colonial house. The main staircase leading to the kitchen was entirely cut off by a wall of intense orange flames shooting up from the lower level. Their only viable escape route was the second-story balcony at the end of the long hallway, which led down to the stone patio in the backyard.
"Stay close to me, stay low to the floor, and keep your wet towels over your faces!" Julian commanded, his voice ringing with a desperate authority that left no room for hesitation.
They scrambled down the smoke-filled hallway, crawling on their hands and knees past the open cavity in the wall where Clara’s remains were still resting. As they passed the gaping hole, Julian glanced inside one last time. Through the haze of black smoke, he could have sworn the skeletal hand resting on the canvas suitcase had shifted slightly, as if pointing toward the rear window. He blinked hard, telling himself it was just the optical illusion of the flickering flames and shifting shadows.
They reached the heavy French doors leading out to the balcony. Julian threw his full weight against the glass, shattering the old latch, and shoved the doors open. Fresh, cool night air rushed into their lungs, offering an immediate and desperate relief from the poisonous smoke inside.
Officer Miller followed closely behind them, coughing heavily and wiping soot from his eyes. He immediately assessed the drop to the patio below, which was roughly fifteen feet down.
"I’ll go first and catch the kids," Officer Miller said, hoisting himself over the wrought-iron railing and dropping cleanly onto the flagstones below. "Leo, come on! Jump into my arms!"
Leo hesitated for a split second, looking back at the burning house, before trusting the officer and leaping over the edge. Officer Miller caught him securely, setting the boy safely onto the grass.
"Chloe, your turn, sweetheart," Julian urged, lifting his trembling daughter over the railing.
Chloe landed safely beside her brother, both of them coughing but unharmed. Julian turned back toward the burning hallway to descend himself, but a sudden, violent explosion from the kitchen below rocked the house, sending a shockwave that shattered the remaining windows and blew the balcony doors off their hinges.
Through the dense wall of rolling black smoke just inside the ruined doorway, a tall silhouette stood framed against the raging fire. It was Eleanor. Her maroon dress was charred at the hem, her hair bun had partially unraveled with golden strands floating wildly around her face like a halo of madness, and she was holding a heavy iron fireplace poker in her right hand.
Eleanor stepped out onto the crumbling balcony ledge, blocking Julian’s only path to escape, and smiled a cold, terrifying smile as the flames roared behind her.

"You really thought you could burn down my life and walk away, Julian?" Eleanor asked smoothly, her voice cutting effortlessly through the deafening roar of the fire.
