Chapter 1 - The First Crack

The double wooden doors vibrated against the mahogany frame as the heavy boots of the police officer echoed through the grand hallway. Julian stood shoulder to shoulder with the law enforcement official, his chest heaving under the dark blue suit he had worn straight from the corporate boardroom. His face was carved from granite, but his eyes betrayed a terrifying panic. In the corner of the stifling hallway, pressed desperately against the vintage floral wallpaper, his young son, Leo, shielded his weeping sister, Chloe. Standing over them, her blonde hair pinned back into an immaculate bun that defied the chaos of the moment, Eleanor glared down with eyes like shards of winter ice. Her maroon sleeveless dress was immaculate, save for the faint smudge of dust on the hem.
Julian pointed a trembling finger at his wife, his voice cracking with a fury that rattled the crystal chandelier overhead.
"Step away from them, Eleanor! This nightmare ends right now!"
Eleanor did not flinch. She slowly turned her head, her jaw tightening until the skin stretched white over her cheekbones.
"You brought the police into this house, Julian?" Eleanor whispered, her voice dripping with a venomous calm that sent a chill down Julian’s spine. "You invited strangers into our private matters?"
Leo’s voice cut through the tense air, sharp and unyielding as he gripped his grey hoodie tighter.
"She tried to silence us, Dad! She’s been lying to you for years!"
Eleanor took a deliberate step forward, her gaze locking onto her son with a terrifying intensity.
"Dead children don't get to rewrite history, Leo."
Julian surged forward, shoving himself between his wife and the children.
"Don't you ever touch my son again!" Julian roared, his hand coming down hard on Eleanor’s wrist.
Eleanor smiled, a horrific, empty gesture that reached none of her eyes. She leaned in close to Julian’s ear, whispering something so softly that even the officer standing two feet away couldn't catch the words. But Julian heard it, and the color drained completely from his face, turning him the shade of ash.
Chloe, her small frame shaking violently in her white t-shirt, pulled her father’s coat. She raised a trembling, dirt-smudged finger toward a torn section of the floral wallpaper. A streak of dried crimson paint smeared the plaster, and wedged directly into the crack was a long, unmistakable strand of golden hair.

"Daddy," Chloe sobbed, her voice barely a whisper of pure terror. "Mommy is still inside that wall."
