Chapter 14 - Beneath the Foundation

The floorboards of the second-story landing gave way with a sudden, violent crack, but it wasn't Eleanor who fell—it was a heavy iron trapdoor built directly into the base of the grand staircase that sprang open with a deafening screech of rusted hinges. A dark, subterranean stairwell plunged downward into the pitch-black earth beneath the house, revealing a hidden bunker that neither Julian nor the original architects had ever known existed.

Officer Miller aimed his flashlight down the steep, damp concrete steps, his expression hardening.

"Federal backup is five minutes out, Vance," Officer Miller said firmly. "We wait for the tactical team before we go down there."

Julian shook his head, staring into the abyss of the hidden bunker. He knew Eleanor wasn't going to wait.

"My children are out there, and she’s down there," Julian said quietly, stepping past the police officer and descending the cold concrete stairs into the darkness.
