Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Drywall

The cold steel of Officer Miller’s pocket knife sliced into the vintage floral wallpaper, the sound tearing through the silent hallway like a dying breath. Brown paper and dusty insulation spilled out onto the polished hardwood floor, smelling faintly of damp earth and old lime. Julian kept one arm firmly around Leo and Chloe, pulling them back toward the safety of the staircase while his eyes remained glued to the jagged opening in the wall. Officer Miller pulled out a larger heavy-duty flashlight, clicking it to its highest setting, and thrust the beam deep into the dark cavity between the wooden studs.

What the light revealed made the officer involuntarily step back, his breath catching in his throat.

Wedged tightly between the wooden beams, surrounded by layers of old insulation and construction debris, was the corner of a heavy canvas suitcase. A luggage tag, faded and worn by time, hung from the leather handle. On the tag, written in neat, familiar cursive, was a single word that stopped Julian’s heart entirely: Clara.

"Eleanor," Julian choked out, the name tearing from his throat like a jagged piece of glass. He spun around, desperate to confront his wife, but the guest room doorway was completely empty. The room was dark, silent, and entirely vacant. The window was wide open, letting in the cold evening wind, and the maroon fabric of a dress fluttered briefly against the exterior trellis before disappearing into the shadows of the garden below.

Leo pointed a trembling finger at the canvas suitcase inside the wall.

"She put her there, Dad. I saw her do it. I was hiding in the linen closet three years ago. I saw her drag the bag down the hall."

Officer Miller holstered his weapon and immediately reached for his radio, his voice sharp and urgent as he broadcasted a code for immediate backup and a perimeter lockdown.

"Dispatch, we have potential human remains behind a residential wall. Requesting CSI and a K-9 unit to the residence immediately. Suspect is a middle-aged female, blonde hair, wearing a maroon dress, fleeing on foot toward the wooded area behind the property."

Julian sank to his knees on the hardwood floor, the strength entirely leaving his legs. He reached out with a trembling hand and touched the edge of the canvas suitcase. The fabric was stiff, cold, and stained with something dark that had soaked deep into the fibers. He looked at his children, realizing with sickening clarity that the monster they had been sharing a home with wasn't a stranger—she was the woman who kissed his forehead every morning before work.

Officer Miller grabbed a heavy crowbar from his patrol kit in the hallway and wedged the tip into the plaster seam.

"Mr. Vance," the officer said quietly, not looking back. "You need to take the kids downstairs. You don't want to see what's inside this bag."

Julian shook his head slowly, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes.

"No," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying resolve. "I need to know the truth. Open it."
