Chapter 5 - Behind the Glass

Julian gently lifted the heavy wooden picture frame off the hallway wall, his fingers trembling as he slid the small metal tabs holding the cardboard backing in place. Officer Miller paused, stepping closer with his flashlight as Julian peeled away the dusty paper backing. Inside, tucked neatly behind the smiling family portrait, was a thick stack of old bank statements and a handwritten journal with a dark leather cover. Julian opened the journal to the first page, recognizing Eleanor’s sharp, clinical handwriting immediately. The date on the top page was dated three years ago—the exact week Clara had vanished.

Julian’s eyes scanned the first few lines, and his breath hitched in his throat.

Julian is too weak to handle the truth, the entry read in Eleanor’s unapologetic scrawl. He loves his sister too much to see what she really is. Clara tried to tell him about the inheritance. She tried to take everything we built. So I solved the problem the only way a permanent family requires.

Officer Miller shined his light over Julian’s shoulder, reading the incriminating words with a hardened expression.

"This is a full confession written in her own hand," the officer said quietly. "Mr. Vance, this changes everything. She didn't just murder your sister in a moment of passion. This was calculated. She planned it down to the last detail."

Leo and Chloe stood quietly beside their father, holding onto each other for dear life. The reality of what their mother was began to sink in, replacing their immediate terror with a profound, aching sorrow. They had lived under the same roof as a predator, eating dinners cooked by her hands, walking past the very wall where her crime was concealed every single day.

Julian flipped through the pages of the journal, his stomach turning as he read entries detailing how Eleanor had systematically isolated him from his friends, manipulated his finances, and disposed of anyone who questioned her absolute authority in the household. But the last entry, dated only two hours ago, made Julian’s blood run completely cold.

If Julian ever finds out, we burn together, the final sentence read. I have left a surprise in the basement that will make sure this house—and everyone in it—goes down in flames.

Julian dropped the journal as if it were burning his skin, the book hitting the hardwood floor with a sharp thud. He grabbed his children by the shoulders, sheer panic returning with a vengeance.

"The basement," Julian gasped, looking wildly at Officer Miller. "She said she left something in the basement!"

Before the officer could react, a low, muffled rumble echoed from beneath the floorboards, shaking the entire foundation of the house. A thick plume of grey smoke began to seep upward through the heating vents in the hallway, smelling heavily of gasoline and burnt plastic.

Chloe buried her face in Julian’s chest, crying softly as the smoke grew thicker.

"Dad," Chloe choked out through her tears. "The stairs are blocked. How are we going to get out?"
