Chapter 4 - The Unraveling Truth

The screech of tearing metal echoed through the quiet house as Officer Miller forced the rusted zipper of the canvas suitcase. A thick, suffocating cloud of dust and ancient decay billowed out into the hallway, causing Leo and Chloe to cough violently. Julian pulled his children closer, burying their faces against his chest so they wouldn't have to look at the horrors hidden within the dark cavity of the wall. Inside the suitcase, wrapped meticulously in layers of plastic sheeting and heavy winter coats, was a human skeleton. The golden hair that Chloe had spotted earlier was tangled around the skull, gleaming under the harsh light of the police flashlight like a cruel mockery of life.
Officer Miller pulled out a pair of latex gloves from his pocket, carefully peeling back the outer layer of plastic to reveal a silver charm bracelet resting against the bone of the wrist. Julian recognized it instantly. It was the bracelet he had bought Clara for her thirtieth birthday—the exact same birthday celebration where Eleanor had supposedly driven her to the airport in the middle of a torrential rainstorm.
"She told me Clara missed her flight," Julian whispered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "She showed me a fake text message from Clara’s phone saying she had landed safely in Seattle. She lied to me for three whole years."
Leo looked up at his father, his young eyes holding a wisdom born of too much fear.
"She made me swear not to tell anyone, Dad," Leo said, his voice cracking. "She said if I told you that Aunt Clara was in the wall, she would put you in there too. She kept a hammer in her bedside drawer just to show me she meant it."
The wail of approaching police sirens cut through the night air, growing louder by the second as multiple cruisers raced up the long gravel driveway, their red and blue lights painting the floral wallpaper in dizzying flashes of color. Additional officers poured through the front door, shouting orders, securing the perimeter, and cordoning off the crime scene with yellow tape. Amidst the chaos, Julian felt completely numb, as if his soul had been ripped out and left behind the drywall alongside his sister.
Officer Miller stepped back from the wall, his expression grim as he looked at Julian.
"Mr. Vance, we’re going to need you and the children to come down to the station to give a formal statement. We have units searching the woods, but Eleanor Vance is resourceful. We need to know everywhere she might have gone."
Julian nodded slowly, standing up and holding his children’s hands tightly. As he turned to leave the hallway for the last time, his eyes caught a small framed photograph hanging near the guest room door. It was a family portrait taken five years ago. Eleanor stood in the center, smiling warmly in her favorite maroon dress, her arm linked comfortably through Julian’s. But looking closely, Julian noticed something he had missed every single day for half a decade. In the background, partially obscured by the shadows of the hallway mirror, was the exact same floral wallpaper where Clara now lay buried.
Leo suddenly tugged on Julian’s coat, pointing a finger at the back of the photograph frame where the cardboard backing was slightly loose.

"Dad," Leo whispered urgently. "Look behind the picture. She hid something else right before the police came."
