Chapter 9 - The Standoff in the Hold

Julian slowly turned around, shielding Ethan behind his leg while holding Lily securely against his chest.
Victor stood in the blown-out doorway of the tool room, holding a sleek 9mm pistol in his right hand. His expensive navy suit was ruined, splattered with grease and rainwater, and his hair was plastered across his forehead. Yet, his eyes burned with the wild, desperate fanaticism of a cornered animal.
"You really don't know when to quit, do you, Julian?" Victor laughed, a harsh, grating sound that bounced off the steel walls. "You always had to be the golden boy. Father's favorite. The CEO. The protector."
"Put the gun down, Victor," Julian said, his voice dropping into a lethal, steady cadence. "You've already lost. The perimeter is sealed, and the Coast Guard is intercepting this vessel as we speak."
"Let them try," Victor snarled, stepping further into the room, keeping the barrel of the pistol trained squarely on Julian's chest. "Once I get out to international waters, I have buyers waiting who will trade anything for the Vance shipping security clearance codes. And these two little brats are my only leverage to make sure you hand those codes over."
"You're talking about your own niece and nephew," Julian said, his dark eyes narrowing into slits of pure ice. "You tried to poison a seven-year-old boy over a corporate board seat. Have you completely lost your mind?"
"Power isn't given, Julian. It's taken," Victor hissed, his grip on the pistol shaking slightly. "You think you're untouchable with your tattoos and your private security firm. But you were blind. You never saw me coming until that little brat of yours knocked over a damn cake."
Lily buried her face into Julian's shoulder, whimpering softly at the raised voices. Julian felt a surge of white-hot fury course through his veins, but he forced himself to breathe slowly, keeping his body completely still to protect his children.
"Daddy, I'm scared," Ethan whispered, clutching Julian's trouser leg tightly.
"Don't look at him, buddy. Look at me," Julian whispered back, maintaining unwavering eye contact with his brother.
Julian’s right hand slowly drifted down toward his tactical belt, hovering inches away from the secondary sidearm concealed beneath his shirt. Victor was blinded by his own arrogance and desperation; he was watching Julian's face, completely missing the subtle movement of Julian's fingers.
"It ends here, Victor," Julian said, buying another fraction of a second. "Drop the weapon, and maybe the board will let you spend the rest of your life in a comfortable federal prison instead of a maximum-security hole."
"I'd rather burn this whole empire to the ash—"

Victor started to raise the pistol barrel higher, but Julian moved with terrifying, explosive speed.
